Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

239. Letting Our Inner Selves Be Cared For featuring Jacque Gorelick
Q: What advice would you share with writers working on their memoirs?
Commit to the project for the long run, expect and endure rejection, take care of yourself, focus on the immediate drafting and revision tasks rather than external pressures, and allow the manuscript to evolve through persistent, patient work.
239. Letting Our Inner Selves Be Cared For featuring Jacque Gorelick
Q: How do you feel now about the empty space and protecting yourself in family dynamics?
The empty space around the mother figure remains a lifelong, delicate issue; with age I've softened and become more trusting, yet that early pain still lives as a protective coping strategy that I've learned to manage rather than erase.
239. Letting Our Inner Selves Be Cared For featuring Jacque Gorelick
Q: How long after the first crisis did you begin to write about the experience?
It took roughly a decade before I started writing about it; I left teaching to pursue writing classes, found the seed of the idea in a memoir class, and began shaping the skeleton of the memoir with an outline and early chapters.
239. Letting Our Inner Selves Be Cared For featuring Jacque Gorelick
Q: To begin with, can you share a bit about your new memoir, Map of a Heart?
The memoir is about a new mother's hard-won family life upended by a sudden medical crisis, braided with the backstory of childhood loss and family instability, and crafted through an epistolary-present tense structure to give readers a vivid, intimate sense of the experience.
240. Deepening the Narrative Journey and Allowing Ourselves to Go Places We Didn’t Plan featuring Monica Macansantos
Q: Could you read an excerpt from your title essay to show listeners how food and memory intertwine in your work?
Monica reads the calamansi episode, illustrating how a simple recipe becomes a gateway to memory, belonging, and the emotional terrain of migration, while highlighting revision's role in refining sensory detail.
