Afua Hirsch and Peter Frankopan tell the wild stories of some of the most extraordinary men and women ever to have lived – and ask whether they have the rep they deserve. Should Nina Simone’s role in the civil rights movement be more celebrated than it is? When you find out what Picasso got up to in his studio, can you still admire his art? Was Napoleon a hero or a tyrant - or both? (And, while we... more

Real experts, good chemistry seeking a good tonal balance between conversational and informative, as well as impressive production quality.
Don’t listen to the bad reviews on here written by people who don’t understand anything about history.
They are not injecting politics into history, all history is political. History done properly actually examines the nastier aspects of the past. Pointing those out is not a political agenda, it’s good history.

Started listening to this expecting an informed, interesting storytelling. Endured up until the second episode when the left wing identity laden word salad ranting just became too much. Avoid.
Listened to one episode…but the female host peppers every episode with race, black history, slavery, feminism etc.
Stopped after the Thatcher episode the female presenter goes on a tangent criticises Thatcher for opening the door for racism, the “other” (wasn’t she just proud of Britain?) for being feminine - meaning carrying a handbag, discussing motherhood (aka being herself) and not advocating for feminism and not opening the door for more women (it’s not like we’ve had female PMs and MPs ... more
This should stick to what it is, a history podcast. Not a political podcast.
I was excited to listen to another Wondery series but this one falls short for me. Instead of just telling the story of someone who has made an impact in history for whatever reason, I understand that the hosts would like to have their own input into what they see has taken place. Unfortunately Afua has taken it to another level and is quite divisive. She has a platform to put everyone down who isn’t black or female and she uses it. I found it especially on show in the Nina Siemone series.
