From Wondery and Goalhanger Podcasts, Afua Hirsch and Peter Frankopan tell the wild stories of some of the most extraordinary men and women ever to have lived – and ask whether they have the rep they deserve. Should Nina Simone’s role in the civil rights movement be more celebrated than it is? When you find out what Picasso got up to in his studio, can you still admire his art? Was Napoleon a hero... more

I was excited to listen to another Wondery series but this one falls short for me. Instead of just telling the story of someone who has made an impact in history for whatever reason, I understand that the hosts would like to have their own input into what they see has taken place. Afua is a highly articulate moron
I generally greatly appreciate this show. It delves into the most interesting aspects of the people they cover, and the hosts challenge and question each other in exciting and enlarging ways, which all good intellectual conversations should do.
But, one thing screeched like nails on a chalkboard in this episode: Afua referred to Joan of Arc’s “brand” - as if Joan were SELLING herself. It shocks me that Afua either endorses selling yourself, or confuses it with freedom, or has never considered t... more
The subject matter is fascinating. The research done by the hosts is comprehensive but their endless waffle detracts from the story. It’s like they are sparring with each other to demonstrate which one knows more about the topic. Invariably I’ll have tuned out before they have made their point. Unlike other reviewers I don’t mind a bit of opinion from the hosts but don’t dress them up as facts and please stop with the all knowing monologues.
But Can I suggest one of the hosts ends her sentences? I d find myself fast-forwarding through her commentary. The telling of the histories is fantastic, though
