  • Engaging

This podcast is great. I have learnt so much. I always disliked history at school as I didn’t find the uk curriculum topics interesting. Afua and Peter are fantastic at exploring and explaining topics and relating them back to social issues today which is so engaging. I love the refreshing perspectives that Afua brings to the conversations.

Ps Ridiculous that some reviews are complaining about ads. The hosts deserve to be paid for the content they produce. Subscribe if you dont want them.

  • Good, But Inconsistent

I’ve been a listener from the beginning and was overjoyed to find I could watch on YouTube. But this podcast is terrible at keeping pace between the two formats to the point I’m going to unfollow. It’s been 2 weeks since they put up their last video and meanwhile it just piles up in my podcast feed. Is it too much to ask for some consistency?

  • Mixed feelings

I’ve just subscribed as I’m fed up with the adverts. I still

like the show but I’m not enjoying it as much as the previous style/season. I also agree with comments on too many political views from Afua. More of the old style podcasts please.

  • Preferred previous format

I much preferred the previous format of the show. Just feels a bit all over the place now and don’t feel myself reaching to listen to it as much as before.

  • A Good Podcast That Occasionally Lets Ideology Trump History

Legacy is one of the more intellectually stimulating history podcasts available, but a recent episode gave me pause.

Hirsch suggested the Founding Fathers relied too heavily on Greek and Roman traditions — implying racial bias — rather than drawing on African and Chinese political thought. This argument has two serious problems.

The first is empirical. The Founders' intellectual world was shaped by classical republicanism — Polybius, Cicero, Thucydides. Madison, Hamilton, and Jefferson read thes... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rasputin | How Rumour Broke an Empire | Feat. Sir Antony Beevor
Q: Tell us exactly what happened that fateful night.
The plan to kill Rasputin by plotting a party at the Yusupov palace devolved into a bungled sequence of steps: poison was tried but ineffective, a second attempt with pistols failed to stop him initially, and it ended with Rasputin being shot and then pursued outside where he was killed in a brutal, chaotic confrontation.
The Age Of Cargo | Globalisation and the Oceans | 2
Q: But tell me, Afua, about how coal was loaded into the hold of these big ships and barges.
Afua describes bulk loading coal in holds, with loose bulk handling, cranes, chutes, and manual shoveling, highlighting how this contrasted with earlier packaged goods and how mechanization later revolutionized loading.
The Age Of Cargo | Globalisation and the Oceans | 2
Q: Tell us, Afua, about steamships.
Afua explains how steam power removed dependence on wind, enabling reliable schedules and larger cargoes, which catalyzed a shift to a modern, more predictable global logistics system.
Iran | Feat. Kim Ghattas | The Legacies Of 1979 | 2
Q: How do pre-1979 histories and Iran's imperial past coexist with the Islamic Republic's present ideology?
Iranian leaders often blend nationalist sentiment with religious rhetoric, using both to legitimize their actions and to position Iran as a historic regional power beyond mere religious identity.
Iran | Feat. Kim Ghattas | The Legacies Of 1979 | 2
Q: Why have Western administrations consistently misunderstood Iran, and can power really be centralized away from the supreme leader?
Misunderstandings arise from underestimating the structure of power in Iran where the supreme leader remains the ultimate authority, making presidential overtures insufficient without addressing the broader theocratic framework.
