Afua Hirsch and Peter Frankopan tell the wild stories of some of the most extraordinary men and women ever to have lived – and ask whether they have the rep they deserve. Should Nina Simone’s role in the civil rights movement be more celebrated than it is? When you find out what Picasso got up to in his studio, can you still admire his art? Was Napoleon a hero or a tyrant - or both? (And, while we... more

This podcast is great. I have learnt so much. I always disliked history at school as I didn’t find the uk curriculum topics interesting. Afua and Peter are fantastic at exploring and explaining topics and relating them back to social issues today which is so engaging. I love the refreshing perspectives that Afua brings to the conversations.
Ps Ridiculous that some reviews are complaining about ads. The hosts deserve to be paid for the content they produce. Subscribe if you dont want them.
I’ve been a listener from the beginning and was overjoyed to find I could watch on YouTube. But this podcast is terrible at keeping pace between the two formats to the point I’m going to unfollow. It’s been 2 weeks since they put up their last video and meanwhile it just piles up in my podcast feed. Is it too much to ask for some consistency?
I’ve just subscribed as I’m fed up with the adverts. I still
like the show but I’m not enjoying it as much as the previous style/season. I also agree with comments on too many political views from Afua. More of the old style podcasts please.
I much preferred the previous format of the show. Just feels a bit all over the place now and don’t feel myself reaching to listen to it as much as before.
Legacy is one of the more intellectually stimulating history podcasts available, but a recent episode gave me pause.
Hirsch suggested the Founding Fathers relied too heavily on Greek and Roman traditions — implying racial bias — rather than drawing on African and Chinese political thought. This argument has two serious problems.
The first is empirical. The Founders' intellectual world was shaped by classical republicanism — Polybius, Cicero, Thucydides. Madison, Hamilton, and Jefferson read thes... more

A thoughtful history-and-biography show that re-examines iconic figures through a modern lens, weighing fame against legacy and often questioning the narratives around famous lives. Episodes span political revolutions, art, science, leadership, and cultural impact, with a knack for connecting historical figures to contemporary debates about power, identity, and ethics. Guests and hosts frequently challenge traditional depictions, offering nuanced takes on who these figures were and what their legacies mean today. The format has evolved to shorter, topic-driven profiles, which some listeners appreciate for conciseness and insight, while others miss long-form biographical storytelling. Overall, it's likely to appeal to curious, educated liste... more
