E73 - Mick Pascoe, GCSAA Class A Superintendent
Q: Why did you choose Zoysia, particularly Grange Zoysia, for this course?
Zoysia was chosen due to its warm soil temperatures, ability to establish quickly in tropical conditions, resistance to weeds, and the ability to maintain surface quality year-round; the board was initially skeptical, but Pascoe's presentation and the turf's performance won support.
E73 - Mick Pascoe, GCSAA Class A Superintendent
Q: What are the climatic and environmental challenges you face there, and how do you manage them?
Bogor's climate includes about four meters of rain annually and heavy thunderstorms; the course relies on a well-planned irrigation and storage system, drainage design, and shade considerations that impact growth patterns and maintenance schedules, particularly around greens and rough.
E73 - Mick Pascoe, GCSAA Class A Superintendent
Q: So tell us a little bit about the golf course that you look after.
The course is located in Bogor at about 700 meters above sea level, designed by Ernie Els (with Greg Lettsie as the designer), and opened to its current private model in 2024, featuring Zoysia on most areas and Tiff Eagle greens, with a robust water-management system to handle the heavy tropical rainfall.
E75 - Dr. Brian Schwartz is back!
Q: What do you think Tiftuff provides to the sports turf market in Australia and the US?
He describes Tiftuff as a resilient, drought-tolerant grass that maintains a dense playing surface, recovers well, and is suited for varied budgets and maintenance levels in sports facilities, with adoption across major stadiums and venues.
E75 - Dr. Brian Schwartz is back!
Q: How did you first get involved in turfgrass research?
Schwartz explains growing up on a family farm, early exposure to soil and plant breeding through his grandfather, and his path through Texas A&M to the University of Georgia where he joined a large Bermuda grass program, ultimately focusing on turfgrass breeding.
