Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Hard Thing about Hard Tech – Greg Smithies on the TRL 4-5 Challenge
Q: When evaluating teams that have never built anything like this before, what do you weigh—technology progress or the power of storytelling?
He emphasizes that evidence-based evaluation is crucial: the likelihood of securing off-take, the ability to hit technical milestones, and the capacity to hire the right scale-up team; storytelling supports but cannot replace verifiable progress.
The Hard Thing about Hard Tech – Greg Smithies on the TRL 4-5 Challenge
Q: In that operator and kind of investor space, do you find that you gravitate towards one more naturally than the other?
Greg explains that he moves between operating and investing because both provide different cognitive stimulations: hands-on problem solving versus market-facing strategy, and he notes the tradeoffs: deep daily work in startups versus the coffee-and-checks reality of investing.
Taking Over From a Founder CEO: Ian Temperton on Scaling Plastic Energy
Q: What has been the most difficult challenge in getting to the point you're at now, and where did you sweat the most?
Project execution has been the hardest, requiring the organization to grow rapidly to deliver major construction projects, manage complex partnerships, and navigate disrupted supply chains, all while maintaining focus on delivering on those large-scale plants.
Taking Over From a Founder CEO: Ian Temperton on Scaling Plastic Energy
Q: At this stage of your Lab to Market journey, is it essential for a CEO like you to have a technology background, or can a company move on from that?
I do have an engineering background, but the key is learning the ropes, building a capable team, and recognizing when to separate lab innovation from production deployment while maintaining a clear path from lab to market with rigorous governance.
Why 55% of Deep Tech Companies Fail: The Communication Problem No One Talks About | Hailey Eustace
Q: How much does the deep tech industry actually get the importance of communication?
There is recognition of a problem, but founders often don't know where to start; integrating communications into the core strategy from the board level can solve multiple issues at once.
