This podcast is so very helpful for kids navigating friendships. Unfortunately kids don’t really learn how to be friends so this podcast helps them to navigate the inevitable bumps in the road.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Avoiding conflict with friends (Zen, Age 6) | re-release Ep. 57
Q: Hello, Dr. Friendtastic. My name is Zen and I'm six years old. My question is, how do you not let conflicts happen?
The host explains that conflicts will happen in friendships and that there's no way to prevent them completely; instead, focus on understanding your friend, expressing yourself calmly, and seeking compromises. Importantly, if tensions rise, take a short break to cool down and then come back to talk with kindness. The goal is to learn about each other and strengthen the friendship through thoughtful communication and forgiveness when needed.
Understanding a friend’s feelings (Anna, Age 7) | Ep. 148
Q: Hi, my name is Anna and I'm seven years old. I have a question for you. What do you do if your friend is sad and you don't know what you did?
acknowledge you're unsure, look for clues, gently ask what's going on, listen with care, apologize if you may have hurt them, and offer to be there for them without pushing them to share if they're not ready.
She took something that didn’t belong to her (River, Age 9) | 146
Q: Hi, Dr. Friendtastic. My name is River and I'm nine years old. My question about friendship is, my friends and I were playing on the trampoline in my friend's backyard, and I took one of my friend's Labooboo. I was trying to steal it. I apologize to my friend, but I want advice on how I can handle this situation and how I can make it right to my friends.
The host guides River through recognizing the impulse, admitting the mistake honestly, apologizing with a concrete act to repair trust, and then setting up strategies to prevent recurrence by altering situations and practicing self-control.
Teased because of his looks! (Milo, Age 9) | 147
Q: What do I do if a friend calls me names about how I look?
The host advises recognizing the hurt, addressing the issue privately with the friend, saying you don't like the name and asking them to stop; if the behavior continues, talk to a trusted adult and seek supportive peer groups. Emphasize staying calm, setting boundaries, and avoiding retaliatory insults, while maintaining self-respect and choosing to disengage from unkind conversations.
He doesn’t like one kid in the group (Joe, Age 9) | 145
Q: Hi, I'm Joe and I'm nine years old. My question is, what should I do if I want to join a group, but someone I don't want to play with is playing?
The host acknowledges the dilemma and outlines several options: assess why you dislike the kid, consider whether that reason justifies avoiding the entire group, and explore approaches like staying friendly, asserting needs, and choosing to join or look for another group depending on how things go.
