  • JofA

This podcast, not unlike the AICPA in recent years, is starting to sound more like a leftist Ted talk and less like a useful podcast for actual practicing CPAs

  • Informative but awkward

It makes you wonder if accountants trying to sound natural and interesting is the most awkward thing in the world.

There’s just a ton of people who are clearly reading from a script. It’s painful.

  • Poor audio production; decent content

The audio production, editing and mic quality reminds me of podcasts from 5-6 years back. Ultimately the knowledge is good but the two hosts are not very smooth, guests are generally jumbled and the theme tune is weird. I listen to it for the content but it’s painful. I think the AICPA could allocate more of its $400 a year dues to bring in a professional producer.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ancient Greece to AI: The past and future of bank fraud
Q: Looking forward, what are the main fraud types institutions should prepare for as AI and other technologies evolve?
The key areas are deepfakes (both video and audio impersonation), ransomware with increasingly sophisticated extortion tactics, and the potential impact of quantum computing on breaking cryptographic defenses; banks should strengthen identity verification, data protection, incident response, and cryptographic readiness to mitigate these threats.
Ancient Greece to AI: The past and future of bank fraud
Q: Dormant accounts were discussed as a vulnerability; how should institutions approach monitoring those accounts without overstepping customer trust?
Dormant accounts are those with no activity for a specified period; the risk is that fraudsters target these accounts because owners are less likely to notice issues. Institutions should implement verification steps when activity resumes and ensure periodic reviews of dormant accounts to verify legitimacy, balancing security with customer convenience.
Ancient Greece to AI: The past and future of bank fraud
Q: One thing that caught my eye is the historical reference to fraud in ancient Greece; can you expand on what that early example looked like and what it teaches modern banks?
The early case involved a bottom re-loan tied to a ship and cargo; the swindler planned to sink the vessel and keep both the loan and goods. It illustrates how fraud can combine financial instruments with physical risk, and why strong due diligence and risk assessment remain essential, even for seemingly established practices.
The surprising way one CFO grows her network and her knowledge
Q: Tell us something about Paul Young and when you first met him?
We first connected at the Future of Finance Summit three to four years ago, built a friendship through multiple AICPA events, and he later joined her Diary of a CFO podcast, leading to a continued collaboration.
The surprising way one CFO grows her network and her knowledge
Q: Do you want to tell me some about the focus of that session at the CFO Conference?
The session is about how CFOs structure their teams and planning processes to create strategic impact, addressing why the CFO role has outpaced the broader finance function and how to close the talent gap.
