Acclaimed storyteller and author MARTIN SHAW invites us into his study where he freewheels his ferocious imagination into everything he's learnt about life over half a century. He asks: how do we become a real human being? Using myth, storytelling and his own unique form of philosophizing, Shaw reveals what he calls 'archaic technologies' and shows how we can use them today.

Q: What did your process look like when you were learning the Odyssey?
Shaw describes the journey of learning the Odyssey as one that required moving the narrative around and simplifying it for storytelling. He emphasized the emotional impact of the story occurring in its final quarter, when Odysseus returns home.
SHAVIANISMS (2) with MARTIN SHAW
Q: How do you see Jesus saying that anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life, comparing to the journey of descent and rebirth in rites of passage work?
Shaw explains that the journey involves encountering life's hardships and understanding them as teachers. He suggests that clinging to external worldly things can lead to a shallow experience of life, while embracing beauty prepares us for deeper, eternal experiences.
