  • JACC specialty podcast

JACC specialty podcasts are getting more numerous and higher in quality. This requires a lot of work in time, so the efforts are commendable. Podcasts need to focus on objective evidence, and hyperbole and opinions should be minimized. Listeners want to have the evidence and the actual data, not broad subjective assessments of treatments and interventions.

Should Interventionalists Get an MBA? Wayne Batchelor, MD, MHS, MBA Responds | JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions
Q: Can you share a concrete example where the MBA directly impacted a real-world decision?
A mentee in private practice faced a private equity bid that would take control of the practice's majority value; using an MBA-honed financial model, Wayne demonstrated the true economic impact of the deal and helped renegotiate terms for greater long-term value.
Should Interventionalists Get an MBA? Wayne Batchelor, MD, MHS, MBA Responds | JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions
Q: Can you balance ongoing surgical practice with executive leadership responsibilities over the long term?
Yes, but it requires careful planning and acceptance that the balance will shift over time; maintaining core clinical skills is important, but growth in leadership may demand reduced clinical volume.
Should Interventionalists Get an MBA? Wayne Batchelor, MD, MHS, MBA Responds | JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions
Q: Why pursue an executive MBA, given already demanding clinical roles?
An executive MBA helps you understand strategy, financial principles, and organizational dynamics that are essential as health systems consolidate and physician leadership moves into the C-suite; it fills gaps that clinical training does not cover.
Should Interventionalists Get an MBA? Wayne Batchelor, MD, MHS, MBA Responds | JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions
Q: What is leadership, and how do you define it for mid-career interventionalists?
Leadership is trust. Without trust, coordinating a team toward shared goals across disparate roles becomes very difficult, so the most important skill is being trustworthy and able to communicate effectively.
Should Interventionalists Get an MBA? J. Dawn Abbott, MD Responds | JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions
Q: How should mid-career clinicians approach developing management skills without an MBA?
Pursue self-directed learning, seek mentorship, and leverage institutional resources such as faculty development, coaching, and targeted courses or MPH-like programs when aligned with career goals.
