Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Meet Amy Tennant, Testicular Cancer Nurse Navigator
Q: What is the most memorable moment since you began, where you felt the impact of your work?
A patient from another state chose IU Health because of the quick response, accessibility, and friendly approach, and afterward he expressed how different it felt to have direct contact rather than leaving messages in voicemails—this moment underscored the core value of the navigator in making patients feel cared for.
Meet Amy Tennant, Testicular Cancer Nurse Navigator
Q: What does the role look like when you first start, and how has it evolved since you joined?
When I started, there was no prior role; I observed the hospital, met surgeons and providers, and built a framework. Over time, the role expanded to include streamlining patient flow, pre-op orientation, and a stronger emphasis on survivorship and peer support after surgery.
Meet Amy Tennant, Testicular Cancer Nurse Navigator
Q: Just for those of us that have no clue, what is a nurse navigator? What do you do?
A nurse navigator is the primary point of contact for testicular cancer patients and their families, acting as an advocate and liaison to guide patients through the entire care journey—medical decisions, logistics, emotional support, and coordination with a multidisciplinary team.
Training and Teaching in Kenya
Q: How would you describe the day-to-day environment and typical day on the ground in Kenya?
A typical day starts with planning, reviewing prior cases, and gathering the surgical team, followed by patient intake, ward rounds, and performing surgeries that are prioritized based on available resources and patient readiness, while maintaining close collaboration with local staff and residents to maximize learning and patient outcomes.
Training and Teaching in Kenya
Q: Can you describe the purpose of the Kenya trip and what you were there to teach?
The trip serves multiple aims: to train residents and faculty, to exchange surgical techniques, and to foster sustainable local capacity. It is a balance of teaching local surgeons, observing and guiding procedures, and learning from the resource-constrained environment to adapt practices that can be implemented back home, with long-term follow-up and program growth as core goals.
