Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Seldy Gray, Creative Executive – E170
Q: What advice would you give to someone unsure of which lane to pursue in writing versus producing?
Her guidance emphasizes gaining real work experience across different roles to illuminate which path fits, recognizing genuine passion for writing versus producing, and the importance of being willing to test ideas, attend meetings, and learn how to communicate notes effectively to writers.
Seldy Gray, Creative Executive – E170
Q: Where did you grow up and how did that shape your path into film?
She grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, with limited creative career examples around her, which framed film as a risky but compelling pursuit. Her background in a finance-heavy environment made her hungry to pursue storytelling and eventually led to education and opportunities that steered her toward Hollywood.
Seldy Gray, Creative Executive – E170
Q: For everyone listening, can you say what your job title is and what that kind of means?
Seldy explains that she is a development executive at RK Films, reading submissions, evaluating scripts and books, and serving as the starting point for projects, often preparing pitches and initial materials to bring ideas to screen.
Rob Yescombe, Writer and Director – E166
Q: What does the process look like when you sit down to write Jackpot, from idea to draft to notes?
The germ of Jackpot came from a game mechanic about a lottery and killing for reward; I pitched it to my agents, then the script moved quickly with a producer who wanted to develop it, followed by multiple drafts focused on preserving the premise while adapting for budget and production realities.
Rob Yescombe, Writer and Director – E166
Q: The question about how you approach writing a game versus your scripts for film and television—what differences stand out to you?
Games demand designing an equation that delivers storytelling within a product's rules, while film typically follows a more linear arc; the key is aligning the narrative with how the audience will ultimately experience the game or film, and acknowledging the cultural context of a game when adapting it.
