Episode #23 Omair Khan most recently General Counsel at Iodine now Waystar
Q: How should in-house lawyers think about AI governance to avoid stifling innovation?
Adopt a principles-based approach centered on protecting IP and data privacy, perform dual-layer vendor diligence, and establish internal governance bodies (like an AI committee) to stay ahead of market concerns and shorten sales cycles.
Episode #23 Omair Khan most recently General Counsel at Iodine now Waystar
Q: What was it like going through Iodine's acquisition by Waystar and the cultural shift that followed?
Joining Iodine during its growth phase and navigating the acquisition by Waystar involved managing transitions from a startup-like culture to a more traditional public-company cadence, with emphasis on sustaining high-velocity, high-quality legal support through the change.
Episode #23 Omair Khan most recently General Counsel at Iodine now Waystar
Q: How did the transition to in-house occur, and what were the key learnings from building the team at Trusted Health?
The move happened somewhat serendipitously, with Trusted Health giving him his first in-house experience; during COVID, the company grew rapidly, creating complex compliance, licensure, and employment-law challenges, and he built the legal team from a small core to about ten people.
Episode #23 Omair Khan most recently General Counsel at Iodine now Waystar
Q: What was it like starting in tax litigation at Baker McKenzie, and how did that shape your career?
I stumbled into tax controversy, found it fun and interesting, and observed how large pharma and tech companies navigated IRS disputes, which laid the foundation for later moves into transactional tax and in-house roles.
Episode #23 Omair Khan most recently General Counsel at Iodine now Waystar
Q: Why did you decide to go to law school, and how did you decide on becoming a tax lawyer to start?
I shifted from a pre-med track to economics and government, found the theory engaging, and then pursued accounting to see how tax interacts with law, ultimately deciding to become a tax lawyer and starting at Baker McKenzie in the tax controversy practice.
