  • Endless pontification

Host clearly doesn’t know as much as his guests. It’s hard to understand why anyone sits through this. He’s constantly patronizing guests, rewording their answers, and generally trying to correct them to make himself seem smarter. It’s not working. His “big” ideas? 1) Good, better, best works for everything and 2) cost-based pricing is bad. Avoid.

  • Impact Pricing. TOP 1 pricing podcast!

Impact Pricing is an interesting podcast that broadly illustrates the roles of pricing experts in companies and as consultants. It’s fascinating to hear in the interviews how these experts enjoy their work and to witness the overall high level of expertise among the interviewees. For example, the episode where David Brown discusses his book is particularly unique and insightful. Pricing is both an art and a science.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Buyers Don't Buy (Hint: It's Not Your Price) with Ted Olson
Q: Are buyers rational or irrational?
It's a mix: rational considerations exist, but decisions are heavily influenced by primal, emotional factors and perceived safety.
The Hardest Part of Every Buying Decision with Dan Rochon
Q: What is one piece of pricing advice you would give our listeners that could have a big impact on their business?
Focus on funnel awareness and ensuring you have enough of the right decision-makers at the top so you can progressively move them down the funnel; cultivate confidence that your value is clear, and communicate in a way that resonates with the buyer's goals before discussing price.
How Jobs to Be Done Shapes Buyer Decisions (And What They Really Want) with Jim Kalbach
Q: How does Jobs to Be Done influence pricing and value perception?
Pricing should be driven by the value of solving buyer problems, not by the features of a product; the framework helps identify unmet needs and reflect those in marketing and pricing, reducing risk and increasing likelihood of sales.
How Jobs to Be Done Shapes Buyer Decisions (And What They Really Want) with Jim Kalbach
Q: So why do you think it's so hard for buyers to understand their own problems?
Jim suggests it's because buyers aren't always asked to articulate their problems when a solution is presented, and the Jobs to Be Done framework helps shift the conversation away from solutions to uncover real unmet needs.
Pricing and Billing: Where Strategy Meets Execution with Ryan Susanna
Q: What is one piece of pricing advice you would give our listeners?
Find an isolated way to test your pricing hypothesis before rolling out globally.
