  • Kemi Badenoch - really!

Just listened with horror to Kemi Badenoch. It would be funny if she wasn’t potentially our next Prime Minister. I’ve rarely heard anyone with so much self confidence and so little ability to follow her own arguments. “Inarticulate”

doesn’t get anywhere near. A better master class in question begging - in the proper logical sense - would be almost impossible to devise. And who was providing the applause? Thank you IFG. The entire episode (some hope) should be compulsory listening.

  • Quality information

I have been listening to you for a while. I just went back to listen to the earlier episode on the Internal Market Bill. This is what an engaged citizen wants, in my view. Less on controversy, more on actual content of the proposed bill, the motivation of the legislator, and how various key stakeholderes will view it. An rich, but easy listening discussion, nonetheless.

  • Lost my patience

Lost my patience and temper with this. Some guests are unbelievably snooty, especially from the food and drink association who seem to have their collective heads in the sand. The sheer arrogance and exceptionalism just gets on my nerves now. Had enough!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A keynote speech by Dan Tomlinson MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury
Q: Ali asked whether HMRC should have a minister for HMRC and how accountability should work given policy and administration are sometimes separated.
Dan argued that the minister with responsibility sits on the HMRC board, is accountable for performance, and should engage publicly with scrutiny, while recognizing shared accountability with other Whitehall bodies on cross-cutting issues like customs policy.
A keynote speech by Dan Tomlinson MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury
Q: David asked about HMRC productivity and how productivity is measured given public sector targets.
Dan explained HMRC tracks measurable metrics like backlog clearance, forms processed per official, and service throughput, using weekly updates and data-driven management to improve productivity while maintaining service quality.
A keynote speech by Dan Tomlinson MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury
Q: George asked about simplification and whether the government will push ahead with tax simplification given the fiscal constraints.
Dan said simplification is desirable but must be pursued with fiscal responsibility, exploring areas where simplification can be achieved without large costs, and considering both technical and policy simplification together with ongoing plans to engage with stakeholders.
Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP: keynote speech
Q: What about concerns that scrapping the duty could disadvantage vulnerable groups?
The Equality Act already protects rights; repealing the duty would not remove protections and would prevent overreach by forcing a box-ticking mentality.
Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP: keynote speech
Q: How will scrapping the public sector equality duty help improve frontline services?
It will stop officials from chasing irrelevant compliance and allow them to focus on delivering frontline services, with judgment and common sense returning to decision-making.
