One of my favorite coaching podcasts. I’m an Idaho coach too, but the excellent interviews come from all over. Will asks great questions—this podcast should be better known.

  • Prepared and Informative

I stumbled onto this several weeks ago. I have enjoyed listening to various topics that speak directly to high school coaches. As a guest, I was impressed and really appreciated that Will had done his homework and was prepared for the interview. I will be a regular listener!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Slices of the Game w/ Drew Dunlop
Q: So what are two or three questions that coaches should be asking as they reflect back on their drills?
Focus on identifying the problems you want players to solve, then reframe drill choices around those problems. Use the four questions in the reps framework—real game conditions, opportunity for problem solving, perceptual demands, and self-organization—to ensure multiple solutions and authentic decision-making are built into practice.
Conceptual Defense w/ James Anderson
Q: How did your offense adapt to your defense and your personnel this season?
We moved from a guard-oriented attack to a wing-oriented approach, used a language-based conceptual offense, and relied on post-entry and a high-low structure to maximize our bigs and shooters, while staying adaptable to opponents.
Conceptual Defense w/ James Anderson
Q: What did you think you needed to do defensively to compete for a state title, especially against a team like Owyhee?
We focused on creating a flexible, self-made defensive identity, eliminating easy catches, preventing right-handed drives, and using pill switching to disrupt offenses, while training to win first dribbles and controlling the pace with our gaps.
Constraints and Creativity w/ Dave Lepisto
Q: What tips do you have for coaches just getting familiar with the constraints led approach?
Have clarity in your vision and be specific about what you want to see, ensuring a safe environment for kids to fail and learn.
Constraints and Creativity w/ Dave Lepisto
Q: How do fun, enjoyment and creativity connect to the constraints led approach?
It starts with identity; our team is fun to play with and a nightmare to play against, focusing on fun, freedom, belonging, and power.
