Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 1495: Think Tank: Rising gas prices will squeeze Europe chemicals, fertilizers
Q: So Ed, first, let's make sure listeners understand the background to how gas markets have changed in Europe just over the last few years. Perhaps you could tell us why Europe has become more reliant on LNG since 2022, and what has this meant for gas consumers, such as chemical companies?
Europe shifted away from Russian gas after 2022, increasing LNG dependence and exposing the region to global LNG price dynamics. This has contributed to higher prices and greater volatility, with chemical producers facing feedstock and energy cost pressures as LNG shares in gas supply rose.
Episode 1493: PODCAST: How the US-Iran conflict is reshaping India's PE, PP markets (part two)
Q: What is your near-term outlook for India's PE and PP markets given these logistics and demand shifts?
In the near term, supply disruptions are accelerating a shift in trade flows; buyers are seeking diversification and longer planning horizons, with continued uncertainty in logistics and regional tensions likely to keep prices volatile and inventories precarious.
Episode 1493: PODCAST: How the US-Iran conflict is reshaping India's PE, PP markets (part two)
Q: Can you tell us more about the main logistical challenges and how they are affecting buying decisions?
The major issues are longer lead times and higher freight costs due to red sea disruptions, with buyers prioritizing supply reliability and diversifying sourcing to China and Southeast Asia for PP, and to the US and Southeast Asia for PE to reduce dependence on the Middle East.
Episode 1492: PODCAST: How the US-Iran conflict is reshaping India's PE, PP markets (part one)
Q: Is there any particular reason why India is so exposed to supply disruptions stemming from the Middle East?
India has long depended heavily on Middle Eastern supplies for PE and PP, aided by easier trade, shorter transit times, and financing options; conflict-related disruptions to production and port operations, plus logistics bottlenecks, have intensified import reliance and affected domestic production.
Episode 1492: PODCAST: How the US-Iran conflict is reshaping India's PE, PP markets (part one)
Q: Thanks for joining us, Aswin. How have India's polyethylene and polypropylene markets moved since the conflict began?
Prices moved in a topsy-turvy pattern: sharp increases in the early phase due to feedstock and logistics concerns, a drop as hopes for ceasefire improved, followed by another rise as tensions re-escalated and shipping disruptions persisted; HDPE and PP premiums fluctuated but remained elevated compared with pre-conflict levels.
