Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

131: From the Archives – Greg Cooper
Q: So one of the activities you do is you're a director of a fintech company OpenInvest. What is your interest there in this particular space?
OpenInvest represents a move toward delivering simple, well-diversified portfolios at low cost to the general public while leveraging technology and social features to engage users, with a fiduciary mindset balancing cost and quality of investment outcomes.
131: From the Archives – Greg Cooper
Q: And you spent almost 20 years at Reuters, climbing up to be the CEO of the Australian business and also had a global distribution role. What are some of the highlights?
Highlights include witnessing and contributing to the rapid evolution of the Australian and global investment marketplace, expanding the scale of funds, and driving discussions about better practices and governance, while navigating the industry's cyclical nature.
131: From the Archives – Greg Cooper
Q: Yeah. So how do you transition from an actuary training to an investment career?
I began in traditional actuarial roles, then moved into investment asset consulting and research, notably around managed futures, which sparked my interest in the investment space and eventual leadership roles in asset management.
131: From the Archives – Greg Cooper
Q: So, can you tell me a little bit about how you started in the asset management industry? We had some former guests on the internet started with, you know, creating banks at AID. What were you doing at AID?
I wasn't creating banks; I pursued actuarial studies and eventually moved into investment consulting and research on managed futures, which led me toward hedge funds and the broader asset management space.
130: RQI Investors' David Walsh – Is A Quant Winter Coming?
Q: Do macro factors belong in the alpha framework, or are they more for risk management and information purposes?
Macro factors are often better used to inform risk management and situational awareness rather than as direct alpha generators, with a preference for broader, robust signals and a disciplined capital allocation process.
