  • Kurt.

Please oh please let your interview objects talk and follow stream of conciousness. Billy was such an interesting speaker and your laughter and pushing totally destroyed his flow. Learn interview technique!!

  • Ehhh - depends

I really want to like this podcast, and at times I really do! However, there are lots of instances where I want to hear more from the guest than your personal dog. Also, there are times I feel like he’s not prepared. Doesn’t seem to have questions qued up (just my perspective).

EP 64: The Philosophy of Great Dog Training with Andy Attar
Q: For those that don't know who Andy is, can you give them a quick background on who you are and how you got into the retriever game?
Andy describes his long partnership with Pat, their origins in Gary, Indiana, and how he ended up training dogs after following mentors like Mike Lardy, emphasizing the evolution from traditional punitive methods to a more brain-engaged, thoughtful approach.
EP 63: 50 Years of Retriever Wisdom | Jim Van Engen
Q: How do you approach teaching retired guns with young dogs, and when should gunner intervention come into play?
Start with abundant scent and successful practice by first ensuring the dog reliably finds birds with multiple gunners and long throws. Use a mix of real guns and camouflaged setups, progressively increasing distance and complexity, and only intervene when needed to keep the dog from losing the cue or getting overwhelmed. The goal is to have dogs comfortable with long retrieves and multiple gunners before moving to full retirements.
EP 63: 50 Years of Retriever Wisdom | Jim Van Engen
Q: What are some nuances at the line that amateurs miss that pros generally get right?
Pro emphasizes line obedience first—the dog should walk to the line with you, sit or stay in place, and not bounce or lag. This steadiness lets the handler focus on the field and birds, and gives clearer signals and timing for marks. The host also asks about the balance between singles, doubles, and triples, and how line discipline supports advanced handling of birds and gunfire.
EP 59: Bill Hillman on Balance, Multiples, and Amateur Mistakes
Q: How do you avoid over-promising a dog's abilities early in training?
Avoid unrealistic expectations by grounding training in fundamentals, always ensuring the dog can perform the basics reliably before advancing, and continually reassessing goals based on the dog's actual understanding and progress.
EP 59: Bill Hillman on Balance, Multiples, and Amateur Mistakes
Q: What is your ideal progression for teaching multiples?
Start with six singles or six gunned setups to establish clear, repeatable marks, then run them as multiples, then progress to a sextuple with one or two retired birds, ultimately moving to a larger crowd with increased complexity once the dog demonstrates consistency.
