Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode #72 Retriever Training Q&A with Rhett Riddle
Q: What is your approach to peak performance training before a big test?
Focus on marks and blinds, create realistic setup scenarios, and adjust difficulty to keep the dog mentally free while sharpening the end-of-blind finish; back off slightly if the dog tightens up, then progressively reintroduce challenges.
Episode #76 First Hunt Readiness, Force Fetch & Master Test Tips
Q: How should a solo trainer work toward a senior and finished title when training alone?
Invest in wingers and holding blinds to simulate marks, or try to find a training group. If training alone, create drills with throwers so the dog learns to handle birds and to see the marks coming out.
Episode #76 First Hunt Readiness, Force Fetch & Master Test Tips
Q: What are your thoughts on a dog's first hunt in terms of age and season, and whether to skip cold late-season hunts for water in favor of a field hunt?
I'm not a big proponent of a dove or teal first hunt because those birds are fast and easy for a novice dog to miss or be overwhelmed by. Start with a bigger duck that comes in, and keep the dog in situations where it can see and retrieve a bird. Gradually progress and avoid too many people or a loud environment initially.
Episode #75 Flight Day's Ben Meyers Talks Ammo, Puppies & Duck Dogs
Q: What inspired the pivot from Bismuth to steel and how did you validate the new approach?
The founder explains China controls most Bismuth supply and prices spiked dramatically, so they pivoted to steel and used ballistics testing and gel tests to optimize patterning at practical distances, moving away from high-velocity relies to a more efficient, slower steel approach.
Episode #73 The Amateur's Road to a Grand Pass
Q: What training system did you use for Luke's dog?
Luke used an American e-collar-based system with emphasis on fundamentals and situational training, learned through a mix of hands-on training and guidance from the group.
