1976年，北海道三笠市宣布發現日本第一件肉食恐龍頭骨，並替牠取名為「蝦夷三笠龍」。
牠被指定為日本國家天然紀念物，三笠市替牠蓋起暴龍雕像、舉辦恐龍祭、設計吉祥物，甚至讓牠登上圓谷製作的《恐龍探險隊Born Free》。然而隨著化石繼續清修，研究者才發現：牠不是暴龍，甚至根本不是恐龍，而是一隻生活在海裡的滄龍。
2008年，牠被正式命名為「三笠海怪龍」；到了2019年，研究者又認為現有化石可能不足以證明牠是一個獨立物種。

這趟日本之旅，我先去看昭島鯨的頭與身體重新「合體」，接著一路跑到伊豆，拜訪一間只有約25坪的私人菊石博物館。
