  • Slice of life, real talk and laughs

The “How are we 40” podcast is thoroughly entertaining, often insightful, and downright funny. It’s like listening-in on an exceptionally smart & entertaining conversation between two friends who despite different lifestyles have plenty of chemistry on the mic - they cover anything and everything. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants/needs a nice little break from self-improvement podcasts - and doesn’t need another celeb interview today, thank you much. Feels like a breath of fresh air!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Are We All "Bad Mothers"?
Q: Do you think we are entering a 'post-perfect mother' era?
Dickinson expresses skepticism, suggesting that while the pressure remains, platforms like Instagram and TikTok intensify perfectionism and raise stakes for minor missteps, making it harder for mothers to feel confident without public validation.
Are We All "Bad Mothers"?
Q: What practical advice do you offer to listeners dealing with mom guilt?
The practical framework compares intrusive thoughts to YouTube pop-up ads—acknowledge the thought, skip it, and move on. This helps parents focus on what actually serves their children and their families, rather than being trapped by guilt.
Are We All "Bad Mothers"?
Q: How has writing the book changed your view of motherhood personally?
She notes that her perspective shifted from seeing motherhood as a pure conflict between ambition and parenting to recognizing the historical and societal forces shaping those pressures. She emphasizes reduced self-imposed guilt and a more contextual understanding of where expectations come from.
Are We All "Bad Mothers"?
Q: What inspired you to write One Bad Mother?
Dickinson describes a long-standing interest in telling stories about figures who are maligned or misunderstood, particularly mothers who are labeled as bad. The book uses journalism to unpack how the 'bad mother' trope functions, tracing its cultural history from past to present and arguing for a more empathetic, empowered view of motherhood.
Are We Allowed to Not Care About Our Careers Anymore? Amil Niazi on “Life After Ambition”
Q: How has the shift away from a career-first identity affected your sense of self and your approach to parenting and relationships?
She describes gradually detaching self-worth from professional status, embracing boundaries, and prioritizing care work, family life, and community as core sources of meaning beyond employment.
