  • Not pleased with Hoover’s direction

Hoover is an iconic and urgently needed organization for clear thinking conservatives like Victor Davis Hanson and Thomas Sowell.

While I have been a long time admirer of Condoleezza Rice, her academically oriented move toward the center is unproductive for conservatives. She has been dragging the Hoover Institution with her to the detriment of the country. The leftists are playing hardball and she wants to be conciliatory. Looks like Hoover is not balancing Stanford. It’s Stanford that is mov... more

Niall Ferguson and Andrew Preston on the Invention of National Security
Q: What is the relationship between post-9/11 security and earlier national security concepts?
The host argues that after 9/11 the term national security broadened, leading to Homeland Security as a new institutional framework while still being connected to the broader tradition of national security since World War II.
Niall Ferguson and Andrew Preston on the Invention of National Security
Q: How consciously did Franklin Roosevelt see rearmament and war as saving the New Deal?
Roosevelt linked military preparedness to economic recovery, arguing that guns and butter should be pursued together to save the nation from debt and crisis, with a temporary fusion during war that would recede after the emergency.
Niall Ferguson and Andrew Preston on the Invention of National Security
Q: Question, how do you invent national security?
The guest explains that national security was not a given but a constructed concept that expanded beyond mere borders to protect an American way of life, evolving through policy decisions made during the New Deal era and World War II, with Roosevelt defining and shaping the language and scope of security.
Total Defense: The New Deal and the Invention of National Security
Q: Jacob Gantz asks about the period from Roosevelt's death through 1947 and Truman's role in shaping the national security state.
Preston explains that Truman and Marshall played crucial roles in stabilizing and expanding the wartime accord into peacetime policy, resisting a full demobilization while laying groundwork for a permanent national security establishment; the Fair Deal era and debates within the Democratic Party influenced how aggressively the state expanded.
Wargaming The Pacific: Lessons From The Naval War College's Interwar Games
Q: What role did public visibility and politics play in the interwar wargaming era?
Public and political attention around wargaming, including coverage in newspapers and hearings, helped justify defense spending during the Depression and shaped how policymakers perceived naval modernization and industrial base support.
