  • Not pleased with Hoover’s direction

Hoover is an iconic and urgently needed organization for clear thinking conservatives like Victor Davis Hanson and Thomas Sowell.

While I have been a long time admirer of Condoleezza Rice, her academically oriented move toward the center is unproductive for conservatives. She has been dragging the Hoover Institution with her to the detriment of the country. The leftists are playing hardball and she wants to be conciliatory. Looks like Hoover is not balancing Stanford. It’s Stanford that is mov... more

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Niall Ferguson And Eyck Freymann Discuss Defending Taiwan: A Strategy To Prevent War With China
Q: Is there a danger that the Taiwan crisis could occur before avalanche decoupling has become policy, and how should the U.S. respond given this timetable?
The guest acknowledges the risk, argues for starting the process now rather than waiting, and outlines a staged approach that lowers risk of a sudden economic blow while expanding supply-chain resilience and allied cooperation.
Niall Ferguson And Eyck Freymann Discuss Defending Taiwan: A Strategy To Prevent War With China
Q: What's the United States reaction if China asserts sovereignty over Taiwan's trade and shipping and demands new customs at mainland ports?
The host and guest explore three dangerous options for the U.S.—do nothing, escalate to war, or pursue a calibrated economic and political response that protects Taiwan's autonomy while avoiding immediate crisis; the guest emphasizes avoiding apocalyptic moves and instead preparing a credible deterrent and allied coordination.
Rural Banditry And Boko Haram: Governance, Security, And International Engagement In Nigeria
Q: How can analytical distinctions between states' capacity and strategic neglect be made when assessing Nigeria's ability to solve security problems?
There is a spectrum from capability gaps to deliberate neglect, and analysis should consider governance structures, resource allocation, and political will, recognizing that solutions must be population-centered and locally owned to be effective.
Niall Ferguson and Andrew Preston on the Invention of National Security
Q: What is the relationship between post-9/11 security and earlier national security concepts?
The host argues that after 9/11 the term national security broadened, leading to Homeland Security as a new institutional framework while still being connected to the broader tradition of national security since World War II.
Niall Ferguson and Andrew Preston on the Invention of National Security
Q: How consciously did Franklin Roosevelt see rearmament and war as saving the New Deal?
Roosevelt linked military preparedness to economic recovery, arguing that guns and butter should be pursued together to save the nation from debt and crisis, with a temporary fusion during war that would recede after the emergency.
