  • Not pleased with Hoover’s direction

Hoover is an iconic and urgently needed organization for clear thinking conservatives like Victor Davis Hanson and Thomas Sowell.

While I have been a long time admirer of Condoleezza Rice, her academically oriented move toward the center is unproductive for conservatives. She has been dragging the Hoover Institution with her to the detriment of the country. The leftists are playing hardball and she wants to be conciliatory. Looks like Hoover is not balancing Stanford. It’s Stanford that is mov... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Book Talk With Dan Wang: "Breakneck: China's Quest To Engineer The Future"
Q: Can you comment on the role of the educational system in China?
The examination system is totally central to understanding China, and how the examination system captures the intelligentsia is part of the reason that China is not a lawyerly society.
Book Talk With Dan Wang: "Breakneck: China's Quest To Engineer The Future"
Q: How can it be that you can have the fourth largest economy in the world, at the same time as you have this lower state, not necessarily society?
I think there should be a little bit more of a growth mentality and I hope that if California manages to fix some of its urban dysfunctions, as well as governance on the state level, people will start getting more homes, they get more neighbors.
Book Talk With Dan Wang: "Breakneck: China's Quest To Engineer The Future"
Q: What do you think are the most plausible mechanisms to do that?
I would like for there to be more pluralism in the United States, such as our governing elites could feature a few more engineering grads from Cal, or a few more students from Stanford.
Book Talk With Dan Wang: "Breakneck: China's Quest To Engineer The Future"
Q: Let's talk a little bit about how you decided to write a book.
The hard part of writing a book is beginning, the middle, and the end, and I think that a lot of what I'm trying to do is to move beyond these old framings, just to be playful and inventive, and not to take these frameworks of the lawyers and engineers too seriously.
Book Talk With Francis J. Gavin: "Thinking Historically: A Guide To Statecraft & Strategy"
Q: How do you see your book having the real impact that I, if I understand correctly, you want it to have given that divide between policymakers and the think tank world?
One of the things that I want to see is how we train future decision makers shifted and changed.
