  • Basic info that make a big change

Thank you Warren and Pieter. Discussing insurance products (to help me understand these grudge purchases) and helping us understand Financial Freedom and that small amounts WILL make a big difference. When calculating how long it will take for my wife and I to reach FF, it will take another 20 years, but we will be 57 (if investments grow by 10%). Even though we have little now, but knowing that we will reach FF before retirement is comforting. Let’s hope the economy stays the course and inflati... more

The Behaviour Gap: Why Investors Underperform
Q: Ray, is there ever a good time to actually sell a fund, or should investors stay the course most of the time?
Generally avoid selling based on short-term headlines or fear; instead focus on the fund's fit with your goals, time horizon, and risk, and use planned review points to decide if a change is warranted.
Living Annuity Drawdown Strategies Most Retirees Miss
Q: Could you discuss the different ways to structure living annuities to provide monthly income in retirement?
The structure involves creating a mix of conservative and equity investments to manage risks while ensuring cash flow for living expenses, and it's important to consider both compulsory retirement funds and any discretionary assets available to supplement retirement income.
Living Annuity Drawdown Strategies Most Retirees Miss
Q: What portion should be allocated to conservative assets such as money market funds? What is considered a safe withdrawal rate?
A safe withdrawal rate for a living annuity is generally around 4% if you retire at 55, allowing for protection against inflation over time. For those retiring older, such as at 75, the withdrawal rate can be higher but should be approached with caution.
One Fund or Four? The Truth About Diversification
Q: Is it possible to stipulate in my will that my tax-free savings account and discretionary investments be paid into my retirement annuity or my living annuity in the event of my death?
They explain that while retirement funds fall outside of your estate and don't incur estate duty, discretionary funds can only be directed via a will, emphasizing the importance of proper estate planning, especially with minor children.
One Fund or Four? The Truth About Diversification
Q: What do you think about allocating my pension contributions evenly across four different funds?
Warren and Pieter discuss that while diversification is important, spreading investments across multiple similar funds may not provide unique benefits and could simply replicate an expensive index.
