  • Basic info that make a big change

Thank you Warren and Pieter. Discussing insurance products (to help me understand these grudge purchases) and helping us understand Financial Freedom and that small amounts WILL make a big difference. When calculating how long it will take for my wife and I to reach FF, it will take another 20 years, but we will be 57 (if investments grow by 10%). Even though we have little now, but knowing that we will reach FF before retirement is comforting. Let’s hope the economy stays the course and inflati... more

How Much Fees Should I Be Paying On My Investments?
Q: What is a reasonable effective annual fee for all my investments, including fund management, admin, and advisor fees?
A sensible range for a balanced mix of actively managed and index-tracking options is about 1% to 2% for active funds and around 0.2% to 0.6% for index trackers, with admin and platform fees adding about 0.2% to 0.6%. For larger portfolios, a combined total around 1.2% to 1.5% plus VAT is feasible if you consolidate on a capable platform and use a transparent advisory model.
How To Choose A Global Index Fund As A South African
Q: If I earn in US dollars while living abroad, should I keep investments in dollars via EasyEquities USD or convert to rand and invest locally, considering tax and estate implications?
Investing in US-domiciled funds can create estate and tax complications; generally, it's better to use non-US-domiciled ETFs (e.g., Irish-domiciled) when available and keep the core allocation in the currency of your tax residency. If possible, invest in a dollar-based, globally diversified fund and avoid unnecessary currency conversions that add cost and risk.
How To Choose A Global Index Fund As A South African
Q: I've been contributing to a tax-free savings account and am deciding between MSCI World, emerging markets, and JSE Top 40—should I mix them or stick with one core approach?
A simple, long-term strategy often works best: pick a core core global fund like MSCI World or MSCI Acqui for broad diversification, and optionally add a local component such as JSE Top 40 to capture local growth. Avoid excessive overlap by limiting to a small number of funds, and tailor the mix to your time horizon and tax situation.
How To Invest Directly Offshore As A South African
Q: How should a nanny's retirement savings be set up—RA or an ETF—and how to balance debt reduction with investing for future security?
Start with a retirement-focused approach that preserves liquidity where appropriate, consider a retirement annuity for protection against early withdrawals, and address high-interest debt first through education and a structured plan; once debt is under control, automate savings via tax-free accounts or RA to build long-term wealth.
How To Invest Directly Offshore As A South African
Q: What would be the best way to spend 1,500 to 2,000 rand monthly to invest offshore—single shares or ETFs across multiple markets?
The advice is to prefer diversified offshore exposure via rand-denominated global funds or ETFs, focus on index-based investments for long-term growth, and be mindful of tax and currency costs; avoid frequent small currency conversions and consider lumping investments to reduce transaction costs.
