  • I Miss Dany

What happened to Dany Millikan? The new host, while very nice, but not a gardening “expert” needs to let the guest experts answer the questions.

  • Awesome show for Hou area.

Stumbled across this show but WOW what a great podcast of their radio show. Informative, helpful, and a little funny garden show. Love that they have very knowledgeable guests from around the area. Gave me several ideas and just listening made my green thumb a little greener! My plants are a lot happier.

  • Helpful information

I enjoy the informal nature of the show and have benefited greatly from the information and learning about useful products and practices. The hosts are much nicer to the callers than another area garden podcast. However; regularly the first 8-10 minutes are filled with unrelated information that doesn’t pertain to the nature of the show. This may be due to the early timing of the show and perhaps there are no callers yet. I would like to see this time used to discuss a theme for the week rather... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Live in Costa Rica, Grass, Mulch, Compost, Pecan Trees -260620-H1
Q: Is it too late for a weed and feed in the heat?
Yes, it's too late during the extreme heat; focus on building soil and long‑term health, and consider timing for weed control in cooler seasons like April or fall, especially after addressing underlying stress factors.
Cucumbers, Grass, Fruit Trees, Ligustrums, Mosquitos -260613-H2
Q: What could cause the brown patch in the yard after iron application?
The brown patch is likely a fungal brown patch due to rain and high humidity; also consider possible weed-induced issues and ensure air flow and avoid overwatering.
Grasses, Juniper Bush, Herbicide, Rosemary, Kudzu Vines -260628-H2
Q: How can I manage crabgrass in Bermuda without over‑relying on herbicides?
Use a solid pre‑emergent program twice a year (spring and fall), potentially a third application during midsummer while breaking the seed cycle, and ensure Bermuda is healthy through proper mowing, feeding, and soil care.
Grasses, Juniper Bush, Herbicide, Rosemary, Kudzu Vines -260628-H2
Q: What should I do about weeds in St Augustine during heat?
Focus on recovering the St Augustine with proper mowing, watering, and fertilization rather than aggressively using herbicides; if weeds are stubborn, use Celsius or Agri‑Lawn Crabgrass Killer only as a last resort, and always check the product's heat restrictions.
Live in Costa Rica, Tomatos, Potting Soils, Gardenias 260620-H2
Q: Tanya asked about growing a tomato in a patio pot from an apartment balcony, and what soil and pot size to use.
Advise using a minimum 15-gallon black plastic pot with high-quality potting soil engineered for containers, followed by a rotating feeding regimen with Nelson's Veggie Food and Microlife Ultimate; ensure good drainage, avoid cheap dirt, and consider Dirty Dirt Pot It for potting soil.
