  • Amazing and helpful

Such a great find! Working on a lot of these exercises with a young dog who hasn’t had any real training before and we have come on SO much with heel work and recall already. I’ve started one of the courses too and finally feel happy with our progress. Thank you so much for this, I’m still on the early episodes and can’t wait to keep listening.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 134 - the come-in whistle, ticks and canine pregnancy
Q: So let's talk about the come-in whistle.
The come-in whistle is used when your dog overshoots the retrieve, guiding them to return without abandoning the task.
Episode 129 - uncontrolled behaviour in the yard & training multiple dogs
Q: How can I help my dog remain calm when exciting things are happening outside?
You can manage the situation better by having set times of day when the dog is let outside, and using it as a training opportunity to reinforce calm behavior when they see distractions.
Episode 124 - Lining
Q: What age can I start the click-and-retrieve process?
It's usually recommended to start the click-and-retrieve process around five or six months, after the initial puppy raising foundational skills.
Episode 123 - force-free gundog training isn't about training 'gundog skills'
Q: How do you choose your whistle cues? Which ones do you use?
I suggest sticking to a recall whistle and an emergency stop whistle, as those will be your two basic whistle keys to start with.
Episode 93 - NEW Marking course
Q: Can you explain what we may need to do differently or where we can learn that?
The skills required for competition are different from those needed in a hunting scenario. You should clarify your goals regarding what you want your dog to do, as this impacts how you train them.
