  • Amazing and helpful

Such a great find! Working on a lot of these exercises with a young dog who hasn’t had any real training before and we have come on SO much with heel work and recall already. I’ve started one of the courses too and finally feel happy with our progress. Thank you so much for this, I’m still on the early episodes and can’t wait to keep listening.

Episode 148 - how I nearly lost a puppy I bred to rescue
Q: Ben asks which courses to start with for a new puppy, and what the host would recommend starting with now that a Puppy Gundog course is in development.
The host recommends waiting for Puppy Gundog but lists current basics courses, highlighting reliable recall as essential and Heal for retrievers or Steady for puppies that pull/tug, while noting that Puppy Gundog will cover socialization and basics and will integrate with existing courses.
Episode 148 - how I nearly lost a puppy I bred to rescue
Q: Jackie asks for guidance on a Vizsla that has become unusually sticky during training and how to address it.
The host explains that the issue can arise when a dog associates a training location with birds due to planted birds, and suggests restoring free running in a fresh field, avoiding over-planting birds, and gradually reintroducing birds in a controlled way to re-establish hunting behavior without reinforcing stalking.
Episode 139 - Q&A bits and pieces
Q: Are there any gundog specific behaviors that are really important to teach young puppies?
The behavioral health and emotional development are more important than behaviors themselves.
Episode 139 - Q&A bits and pieces
Q: How many training sessions a day and how long are the training sessions?
With my current puppy, I'm just doing one training session a day, which is more due to time constraints.
Episode 139 - Q&A bits and pieces
Q: Do you use a puppy playpen?
No, I don't use a puppy playpen. I think they are very nice for the puppy, as they can become frustrated.
