How the Mohist principle of “inclusive care” leads to political order and (mostly) forbids the fighting of wars.

Disagreements between the Mohists and the Confucians: is seeking benefits the right way to approach life? What motivates us to act morally, care for our loved ones or a doctrine of impartiality?

How did the Mohists establish their consequentialist ethic of “impartial care (jian ’ai)”? Was this theory ultimately grounded in the will of Heaven?

An introduction to the Mozi, the founding text of an anti-elitist school of thought that tests social and political practices by the measure of “benefit.”

  • LEARN NONWESTERN PHILOSOPHY

This is an outstanding introduction to nonwestern philosophies. As a longtime student of Buddhist and Chinese philosophies, I’m highly impressed by the depth and care that have gone into the initial series of episodes on the philosophies of India.

Unfortunately, beg and implore as I have, my philosophy study group colleagues continue to resist taking up any nonwestern philosophy seriously, so entrenched and brainwashed as they have become in their western ethnocentric and parochial mindsets. A... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

HPC 18. Erica Brindley on Music and the Cosmos in Confucianism
Q: Can you elaborate on how music serves as a tool for cultural unification according to Xunzi?
Xunzi argues that music, through its transformative influence, helps sway populations and establish a moral framework, thus playing a crucial role in social engagement and the cultivation of cultural identity.
HPC 18. Erica Brindley on Music and the Cosmos in Confucianism
Q: What do you mean when you say there was a deep relationship between music and the cosmos?
The interrelation suggests that music was not just an art form but a way to connect with and understand the cosmos, with claims that music itself could be seen as a fundamental operation of the cosmic order.
HAP 140 - Cornel West on Himself
Q: How do you see Du Bois? Can you summarize your feelings about him or are they too complicated to do that?
Du Bois means the world to me and I recognize him as the greatest public intellectual of the 20th century, yet I have profound ambivalence due to his elitism and distance from elements of Black culture.
HAP 140 - Cornel West on Himself
Q: Did you have a sense already then that there was this unrecognized phenomenon, African American philosophy, that you could situate yourself in?
I was moving in that direction. At that time, I was about 24 years old, so it was still embryonic, but much of what I would do was rooted in that piece.
HPC 06. Franklin Perkins on Excavated Texts
Q: Why would anyone bother trying to read these texts when we have perfectly readable texts that have been preserved right down through the ages?
They might fill in gaps in the historical record and offer different versions of texts, enhancing our understanding of philosophical developments.
