Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Advocate Aurora’s Apprentice-to-Intern Pathway: Cultivating Future Facilities Leaders.
Q: What role do mentors and existing staff play in developing apprentices?
Seasoned technicians volunteer as mentors, teaching on-the-job across trades, and apprenticeships are embedded in the department's workflow. Mentors help with technical skills and also with soft skills, creating a network that uplifts the whole team and supports the apprentice's growth.
Advocate Aurora’s Apprentice-to-Intern Pathway: Cultivating Future Facilities Leaders.
Q: How does the program handle onboarding, funding, and progression for the apprentices?
Apprentices are funded through an education assistance program, with the organization paying only for 40-hour labor and the state and MATC coordinating the schooling. If an apprentice completes requirements early, they're moved into a full-time role, and seats are backfilled with new entrants; there's a built-in backout plan if someone leaves.
Advocate Aurora’s Apprentice-to-Intern Pathway: Cultivating Future Facilities Leaders.
Q: What is the internship to apprenticeship program, and how is it structured?
It's a state-indented apprenticeship run through Wisconsin, built with MATC and Aurora. It spans about two and a half years, totaling 5,200 hours, mixing on-the-job training with classroom instruction across trades like electrical, boiler operation, HVAC, and plumbing, culminating in a healthcare facilities technician journeyman credential.
Unplanned to Purposeful: A Career in Facilities Management
Q: What advice do you give to younger professionals entering healthcare FM?
Be hungry to learn, seek out mentors, and start building competencies in key systems (nurse call, medical gas, boilers, etc.). Show up ready to work, learn from those around you, and don't be afraid to ask questions. The goal is to become indispensable through expertise and reliability.
Unplanned to Purposeful: A Career in Facilities Management
Q: What was the turning point that pushed you into the director level?
Having a CEO who understood my alignments and backed my approach allowed me to implement changes and lead with a clear, shared vision. It wasn't about knowing all the answers, but about knowing how to find them and how to drive the team to act together.
