Ask Andrea - Finding Clarity in the Middle of the Mess
Q: Is it okay to prioritize my kids' needs when deciding whether to stay or go, especially when fear and uncertainty make lasting decisions hard?
Andrea acknowledges that prioritizing children can be appropriate but warns against using them as a shield to avoid truth. She presents a framework to evaluate whether staying is a conscious choice rooted in stability and self-care, or a fear-based decision to avoid facing the truth. The goal is a decision grounded in clarity and self-respect, with awareness of leaving room for personal boundaries and self-care.
Ask Andrea - Finding Clarity in the Middle of the Mess
Q: After decades of betrayal, how can I begin to heal and decide whether reconciliation is possible when the hurt feels overwhelming?
She advises honoring the magnitude of the grief, stabilizing your own sense of self, gathering data on current honesty and remorse, and giving yourself time without rushing decisions. The emphasis is on restoration of self, assessing sustained change, and deciding based on whether trust can be rebuilt across multiple areas, not just around past events.
Ask Andrea - Finding Clarity in the Middle of the Mess
Q: How do I, the betrayed, move forward when he projects things he did to me as if he truly believes I did them? I'm stuck. His resentment is leaking out sideways into the way he speaks and acts towards me.
Andrea explains that projection often stems from deep shame in the betrayer. The key is to step out of the 'courtroom'—set clear boundaries, avoid defending yourself, and observe whether the other person takes responsibility and shows genuine willingness to change. The focus should be on what the betrayer does now, not on re-litigating past accusations, and you should only move forward if there is honest accountability.
Luke Shillings: A Man's Perspective on Betrayal and Healing [Encore]
Q: What is your advice for others going through a similar situation?
Get clear on the things you can control, seek supportive listening without unsolicited advice, and prioritize your own growth and healing, because that is what ultimately benefits your children and your own life.
Luke Shillings: A Man's Perspective on Betrayal and Healing [Encore]
Q: How did you move from shock to a constructive path forward?
I began journaling to externalize thoughts, learned to distinguish what I could control from what I couldn't, and gradually shifted toward forgiveness as a way to free myself from ongoing pain and to build resilience for the future.
