長期以來，人類看植物沒有移動，外表沒有明顯的雌雄差別，就認為植物沒有交配，沒有生命。
直到十七世紀，格魯解開這個秘密，他發現「雄蕊」上有「花粉」，與「雌蕊」內有「子房」，原來植物有雌雄器官之分，並藉昆蟲，或風進行雌雄交配。從此植物歸屬生物，而非無生命的礦物學。
「雄蕊」、「雌蕊」、「花粉」、「子房」等名詞，也在普世植物學的課本中。在科學史上，格魯被稱為「植物組織學之父」。

詹卡是奧匈帝國世襲的貴族。
奧匈帝國曾經非常強盛，擁有匈牙利、波蘭、義大利與部份德國的領土。
詹卡童年時期，常常與父母去爬山，父母教他觀察植物。
後來，詹卡參加「維也納植物通訊社」，撰文與人分享大自然植物的觀察。
1854年，他進入維也納大學建築學系，建築是他的專長，植物是他的興趣。
1861年，詹卡進入騎兵官校，官校畢業，
政府派他帶一支騎兵隊，鎮守奧德邊界。
那時軍隊的牧草供應不足，詹卡發揮植物專長，
在野外收集牧草番紅花給馬餵食。訓練騎兵時，他教士兵認識植物；
