Selecting Pulse Genetics to Build New Markets
Q: As you look toward the future, what do you think about the seed industry evolving with technologies like genome editing and AI-assisted breeding?
Genome editing and marker-assisted approaches are powerful tools, but they don't replace traditional breeding. The real value comes from using these technologies to complement and accelerate solid, field-proven breeding work. The next owners will have several exciting technologies at their disposal, implemented in a way that advances sustainable production, soil health, and nutrition without sacrificing proven breeding fundamentals.
Selecting Pulse Genetics to Build New Markets
Q: So, you spent a good part of your early career with Rogers Brothers. If I understand right, you left the company maybe early 90s, and then ended up buying back this dry pea genetics development part of their business in 95. Is that right? And tell us kind of how that came about.
The move came after I shifted from seed production to market development. In the downturn, the company redirected investment away from new breeding, so we mutually parted and I kept the dry pea breeding program alive as a consultant. That set the stage for starting Progene with the goal of continuing and expanding the breeding work I'd begun there, and ultimately led to taking on a more formal ownership of the dry pea genetics program as the business evolved.
Risks and Rewards with Adjuvant Selection
Q: What about water quality and AMS—how do they affect adjuvant effectiveness?
Water quality, including hardness, can cause antagonism with certain chemistries. AMS helps condition water by binding minerals, reducing antagonism and improving chemical availability to the plant.
Risks and Rewards with Adjuvant Selection
Q: How do adjuvants interact with nozzle size and droplet formation?
Adjuvants can increase droplet size and reduce the amount of fines, especially with certain nozzle types and in certain conditions, thereby improving coverage and reducing drift.
Risks and Rewards with Adjuvant Selection
Q: What are adjuvants and why do they matter for spray performance?
Adjuvants are additives that enhance pesticide performance by improving delivery to the target, reducing drift, aiding deposition, and sometimes helping pesticides overcome environmental barriers like hot, dry conditions.
