My step-dad claims that “Australia Day” wasn’t even always on Jan 26th to begin with. Supposedly Jeff Kennett or someone of his ilk “suggested” Jan 26th, initially it was just “first Saturday of the month” or whatever it was. Federation, rather than anything else. Maybe that’s a WA thing though, because there’s a ton of things my fully WA step-dad believes are “objectively worse and from the eastern states”.
