I first came across Alexei through his performance as Martin Scorsese on the Aunty Donna show. Charmed by his bright personality and film related witticisms, I fell down the rabbit hole of this beautiful podcast. Thanks to Alexei, I’ve discovered great films I would have otherwise been none the wiser to, such as I Think We’re Alone Now, Dead-End Drive In and The Pied Piper. I listen to the pod at my boring factory job and am always frantically looking for a pen to jot down any films that sound ... more
Alexi shares his love of film in such a genuine way that it is impossible not to share it. I often find myself having a very knee jerk reaction to things I think are designed to be “important” and have missed out on some great pieces of art because of this. The last video store is an antidote to such cynicism.
Alexi, my favorite movies are the Thin Man (1934), the Long Goodbye (1973) and the Green Knight (2021). I have seen inherent vice and big Lebowski.
Alexei, you are my hero. I have recently become a devotee of The Last Video store and just finished listening to each and every episode and have ticked off almost all of the films therein during my life and will endeavour to watch all that you recommend.
My picks: New release - Train Dreams. Weekly’s - There Will Be Blood & The Thing (1982)
Big Love fellow soldier x
To call Alexei the Australian equivalent of Patton Oswalt is an understatement- equally funny and charming, but our friendly neighbourhood video store clerk might just beat him out for a god-level encyclopaedic knowledge of cinema. Gregg Turkington could learn a thing or two from him, as well!
So glad I finally got round the listening to this podcast, it’s now become my happy place. Brings back happy memories of visiting Jerry’s Video on West Hill in Portishead, UK as a kid. Listening from Milw... more
