  • For movie buffs with a SoH

This is an awesome podcast about cinema but what sets it apart from the many hundreds of movie pods out there it also turns the lens on its guests and finds out more about them and the influence of films on their art. And it is all done with a fine sense of bonhomie with a dash of intellectual rigour. So if you don’t want your usual movie review dross, tune into this pod.

  • Hunks only

I first came across Alexei through his performance as Martin Scorsese on the Aunty Donna show. Charmed by his bright personality and film related witticisms, I fell down the rabbit hole of this beautiful podcast. Thanks to Alexei, I’ve discovered great films I would have otherwise been none the wiser to, such as I Think We’re Alone Now, Dead-End Drive In and The Pied Piper. I listen to the pod at my boring factory job and am always frantically looking for a pen to jot down any films that sound ... more

  • Love of art

Alexi shares his love of film in such a genuine way that it is impossible not to share it. I often find myself having a very knee jerk reaction to things I think are designed to be “important” and have missed out on some great pieces of art because of this. The last video store is an antidote to such cynicism.

Alexi, my favorite movies are the Thin Man (1934), the Long Goodbye (1973) and the Green Knight (2021). I have seen inherent vice and big Lebowski.

  • I wanted a Staff Pick and all I got was this excellent podcast

To call Alexei the Australian equivalent of Patton Oswalt is an understatement- equally funny and charming, but our friendly neighbourhood video store clerk might just beat him out for a god-level encyclopaedic knowledge of cinema. Gregg Turkington could learn a thing or two from him, as well!

So glad I finally got round the listening to this podcast, it’s now become my happy place. Brings back happy memories of visiting Jerry’s Video on West Hill in Portishead, UK as a kid. Listening from Milw... more

Genesis Owusu loves EDDINGTON, PERFECT BLUE, and an Adam Sandler film
Q: What draws you to the theme of reality versus fiction in Perfect Blue, and how does it relate to your own art?
He explains that Perfect Blue's ambiguity and its critique of parasocial relationships feel increasingly relevant in the age of social media, influencing how he constructs narrative in his music and visuals.
Josh Thomas cracks up over RAT RACE & LOVE ACTUALLY and thinks CABERET is the best movie of all time
Q: Tell me about Cabaret and why it resonates as your top pick.
Josh explains that Cabaret represents flawless execution of storytelling, performance, and direction, with Liza Minnelli delivering a singular, powerful portrayal that blends vulnerability and stagecraft in a way that elevates the film beyond conventional musical cinema.
Tonight At The Museum host Alex Lee loves cult comedies DOGMA and THE CLIMB
Q: What did Hump Day mean to you during your younger cinema years?
It showed that indie, mumblecore films could be both intimate and formally inventive, helping me see that personal, funny storytelling could be both artistic and accessible.
Tonight At The Museum host Alex Lee loves cult comedies DOGMA and THE CLIMB
Q: Why is Dogma such a meaningful pickup for you?
Dogma feels like a quintessential video-store movie that brought together star-making performances (like Linda Fiorentino) and bold satirical ideas, grounding a wild, sprawling fantasy with relatable human moments.
