Love hearing you both riff on all these topics. Keep it rolling! The days of Aggression, leash enforcement, jigsaw tip tails and snowboard culture identity crisis seem so long ago but also so fresh. PS Brothers Boards forever ❤️

  • The pulse of the era.

Wow you two, that so delivered the industry and era truths. Growing up in Southern VT from '74 - '92 and skiing/riding Bromley from day 1, the pulse of snowboarding was beyond infectious and strong. Then UVM '92-'96 for an Art degree as Burton relocated North to Burlington. This podcast captured all the feels of an unforgettable time when change was a constant every year, be it graphics and board design. This episode crushed. 10 out of 10!!!

  • Gone off

I grew up skateboarding in the late 80’s/early 90’s in Florida so snowboarding has been a blind spot for me. Love hearing how skateboarding and snowboarding seem to be following a similar direction and ideas on how to improve the sport and art of snowboarding. Hosts are great and have a great rapport and that makes the interviews great as well. Great great great

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When Inverts Were Illegal: The History of Getting Upside Down
Q: How did the early inverts become allowed again across competitions?
Riders and organizers negotiated with event rules, preferring criteria that kept tricks legal by grounding a hand at the critical moment to meet the plane rule, allowing tricks like the J-Tare to count while respecting limits.
Behind the Boned Out Era: Snowboarding in 1990
Q: What was the team dynamic like on Burton's A-team during this period?
He recalls a tight, innovative group where Craig Kelly and other teammates highly influenced the culture. Travel, sponsorship logistics, and early product development created a close-knit environment that pushed personal and collective growth.
Behind the Boned Out Era: Snowboarding in 1990
Q: How did the innovation in bindings and gear influence riding style and competition at the time?
Ford explains that the 1990 freestyle binding and the shift to softer boots allowed riders to bone out and tweak aggressively. This era emphasized body position and style, with gear tweaking and canting playing big roles in what was possible on the hill.
Behind the Boned Out Era: Snowboarding in 1990
Q: Can you take us back to the day the image was taken and walk us through what happened?
Jason details that the shoot happened in April 1990 at Mount Baker with Rod Walker photographing. They pushed a jump in the spring conditions, used a snowcat underneath for a dramatic setup, and Ford's tuck knee over the cat became the shot that gained the most coverage.
Snowboarding’s Olympic Origin Story: Part 2
Q: Did you feel any pressure or expectations after winning a gold medal?
Yes, after winning the Olympics, there's a lot of pressure to perform well at subsequent events because now everyone expects you to excel.
