  • Doing Science While Black

The Podcasters explore how they (Black American scientist) figured out they wanted to be animal researchers. They talk about their lack of role models and give advice to their younger selves. They explore barriers they and other Black people face in the sciences and provide their personal strategies to advance opportunities for younger peers. No, there were no fish in this episode, but the podcasters soaked us in an ocean of science, heart and soul. Happy African American History Month.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Life of Gars w/ Dr. Solomon David
Q: Can you describe the basic body plan of a gar and how it differs from more familiar fishes?
Gars have an elongated body like an alligator with fins instead of legs, heavily armored diamond-shaped ganoid scales, and a long jaw full of sharp teeth; they are facultative air-breathers using a vascularized gas bladder that acts like a lung, allowing them to gulp air when oxygen in water is low.
Fish and Climate Change w/ Rollie Williams
Q: Tell us about Climate Town and its aim?
The show focuses on one climate-related topic per episode, uses humor and accessible storytelling to engage audiences, and features co-creator Matt Nelson; they produce longer-form analyses for in-depth subjects and shorter pieces for quicker broadcasts.
Fish and Climate Change w/ Rollie Williams
Q: So Rollie, do you have any plugs for what's coming up?
Rollie plugs a Climate Town event at the Bell House on November 4th in New York, and promotes Climate Town video content on YouTube as well as the Climate Deniers Playbook podcast and related newsletters.
Aquaculture Information Exchange w/ Joe Caterine
Q: Can you share more about the job fair and how it benefits early career professionals?
The virtual job fair will feature multiple employer panels, AI-enabled pre-event grouping, and ongoing access to the AI e-group after the event to continue connections and opportunities.
Aquaculture Information Exchange w/ Joe Caterine
Q: What makes the Aquaculture Information Exchange different from other platforms, and how do you ensure quality content?
Content is curated by humans who actively engage with users, host groups, and moderate discussions to keep conversations civil and useful, aiming to reduce misinformation and promote authentic knowledge sharing.
