  • Exactly what I needed

Episode 470 is my first show to listen to, not sure why it came up in my search. Divine intervention most likely because I have been thinking about learning to play an instrument and this guy (Joe Moore) learned a new instrument at age 39! I am inspired now! And what awesome music. ❤️ This is also so very different from the mainstream garbage that tends to suck me in and has little value. This is wonderful, I love it thank you!

  • Wonderful Podcast

I’ve been listening since this podcast was brand new. It is a really wonderful jam/interview format that makes you feel like you are sitting around the campfire jamming with some of your favorite artists. There are a lot of thoughtful discussions about the history of the music and it’s place in our modern world and in trad culture.

  • The best place for old time music conversation.

Cameron is really creating something special here. To those of us who are coming to this music from the outside, these conversations make the genre feel more open and welcoming.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 501: Phoebe Sanders (Banjo, Limberjacks, and Jig Dolls)
Q: Why did you start playing banjo?
Because it's fun, and switching from piano and fiddle led to a discovery of joy and expression that felt more alive than previous instruments. A good teacher and the right approach made it click and kept me hooked.
Episode 495: Sophie Enloe (Writing New Old Time Tunes)
Q: How has being a professional musician threatened your relationship to music?
Enloe expresses that the pressure of performing can make it hard to enjoy music, but teaching keeps her connected to it.
Episode 495: Sophie Enloe (Writing New Old Time Tunes)
Q: When you write tunes, or maybe specifically when you wrote this one, did you start with an idea and then start writing a melody?
Sophie Enloe mentions that she often starts with her fingers playing the instrument, and creates the melody that way, rather than coming up with something in her head first.
Episode 493: Call Up in the Cool No. 8
Q: What do you think about the current political climate and the need for protest songs?
Cameron argues that protest music is important, but also emphasizes the need for skilled artists to convey messages effectively, suggesting that artistic quality can influence the impact of political activism.
Episode 487: The John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project (Sharon Gilchrist, Rachel Baiman, and Ella Korth)
Q: Rachel, do you have anything to add about your experience with John Hartford?
Rachel reflects on how John Hartford inspired her creative journey in music, particularly as she sought a more personal expression in her own work beyond traditional bluegrass standards.
