  • Refreshing

I’m a big fan of what Cameron is bringing to the table here… really bringing light to the world of old time music. I dipped my toes into an episode with Dirk Powell and was very much impressed with his thoughts on murder ballads. And of course, the music is wonderful to listen to. This podcast will be in my steady rotation.

  • Exactly what I needed

Episode 470 is my first show to listen to, not sure why it came up in my search. Divine intervention most likely because I have been thinking about learning to play an instrument and this guy (Joe Moore) learned a new instrument at age 39! I am inspired now! And what awesome music. ❤️ This is also so very different from the mainstream garbage that tends to suck me in and has little value. This is wonderful, I love it thank you!

  • Wonderful Podcast

I’ve been listening since this podcast was brand new. It is a really wonderful jam/interview format that makes you feel like you are sitting around the campfire jamming with some of your favorite artists. There are a lot of thoughtful discussions about the history of the music and it’s place in our modern world and in trad culture.

  • The best place for old time music conversation.

Cameron is really creating something special here. To those of us who are coming to this music from the outside, these conversations make the genre feel more open and welcoming.

Episode 511: Miriam Hacksaw (Malayali Tunes, Political Music, and Liberatory Spirituality)
Q: How do you view Christianity in Kerala in relation to social justice and anti-imperialism?
Christianity in Kerala has historically been liberatory and localized, not tied to empire, and that perspective informs my music as a way to explore liberation without endorsing domination.
Episode 511: Miriam Hacksaw (Malayali Tunes, Political Music, and Liberatory Spirituality)
Q: What is the significance of Tunei Ni Kei Shuvam and how does it connect to your Malayalam heritage?
It's a hymn learned from my aunt that I reinterpreted as a fiddle tune to connect family heritage with modern Old Time sensibilities, while the Malayalam script keeps the obscurity and esoteric vibe.
Episode 509: Sasha Stolasz (Cool Fiddle Moms and Learning from YouTube)
Q: What role has YouTube played in your learning process?
Sasha emphasizes YouTube as a primary teacher, citing Brad Klautner's tutorial as a source for a Wandering Boy, and discusses the broader shift from radio-era learning to video-based learning in today's scene.
Episode 509: Sasha Stolasz (Cool Fiddle Moms and Learning from YouTube)
Q: How did your background and family influence your path into Old Time?
She talks about growing up with a fiddling mother who taught her by ear, the move from the fiddle to the banjo sparked by aesthetic appeal, and how family music-making and camps shaped her ongoing engagement with Old Time.
Episode 509: Sasha Stolasz (Cool Fiddle Moms and Learning from YouTube)
Q: When did you first learn that tune and where did you pick it up?
Sasha explains that she started learning that particular tune in winter, motivated by genuine love for the music and inspiration from Brittany Haas' rendition, and notes that she often learns by listening to others and watching YouTube tutorials.
