Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

21. Dr. J. Stuart Ablon on Collaborative Problem Solving
Q: Can you describe how your training program at Mass General incorporates CPS for fellows and residents?
We have a standard curriculum that introduces traditional behavior concepts, then teaches the CPS framework through three plans and practice with families, with supervision as they implement it in real clinical settings.
21. Dr. J. Stuart Ablon on Collaborative Problem Solving
Q: Before we get into CPS, what drew you to this field and to this work?
I came to work with kids with behavioral challenges after early experiences and formed a collaboration with Ross Green that shaped CPS. My goal has been to understand behavior through skills and relationships rather than mere punishment or external motivation.
21. Dr. J. Stuart Ablon on Collaborative Problem Solving
Q: What do you do for work and what does a day in your life look like?
I direct Think Kids at Mass General, focusing on understanding behavioral challenges in kids and adolescents and applying CPS across settings like hospitals, schools, and treatment facilities. A typical day involves supervising teams, training clinicians and families, and implementation of CPS protocols.
26. Practicing Without Distance: Building Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in Rural America | Dr. Martha Karlstad
Q: Could you walk us through how CPCP works and its impact on primary care clinicians managing youth mental health concerns?
CPCP (psychiatric access program) provides real-time educational support to primary care providers via a team of child/adolescent psychiatrists and psychologists. They answer questions on case management, diagnostic clarity, resources, and medications, helping PCPs manage patients while awaiting specialty access; the program also includes education, residency didactics, and broader system-level collaboration to reduce burnout among providers.
26. Practicing Without Distance: Building Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in Rural America | Dr. Martha Karlstad
Q: To start off, could you share a little bit about your path into psychiatry, and what ultimately drew you to child and adolescent psychiatry during your training?
Her path started with general medical training and a serendipitous psychiatry rotation in a county mental health setting, which revealed a passion for serving high-need populations. A fourth-year “potpourri” rotation in child psychiatry solidified her interest, leading to formal residency and fellowship; she later pursued a rural-focused career and found fulfillment in building a multidisciplinary rural behavioral health team.
