Geneology is a treasure trove of information about Gene Roddenberry’s career before Star Trek. Hosts Earl and Ashley (and in earlier episodes, Norm) take a detailed look at each episode of Gene’s previous works and help connect the dots of Gene’s evolution from a struggling writer in the 1950s to the man who created the Star Trek franchise in the 1960s. You don’t want to miss this podcast if you are a Star Trek fan or a fan of midcentury TV!
Love all things Roddenberry, HUGE Trek fan. The hosts need to step back and realize when these older shows were written and the audience at the time. I genuinely am with them in pointing out the misogyny/abuse etc in these OLD scripts but they go on and on and on about how terrible these things are (because they are) but that’s not why I’m here. Love the trivia, love the breakdown of the scripts, but PLEASE stop making the entire podcast about how horrible men were in the 50’s. We know that. Sur... more
This sounds like it should not work, but it does and it works very well. I did not know that I would enjoy following Gene Roddenberry’s evolution so much.
I highly recommend this podcast for anyone who likes Star Trek, tv westerns or writing.
With so many Trek podcasts out there, it’s hard to find a fresh take on Trek’s roots and on Gene Roddenberry. This podcast definitely provides a different perspective on Gene’s work as the hosts provide a thoughtful review of his older works, with plenty of humor as well. This podcast also provides a really interesting view of how TV shows were commissioned, purchased, and made in the early days of the medium. This podcast is highly recommended.
Really fun and fascinating podcast for lovers of history, specifically the history of TV. Star Trek fans will especially enjoy it, but detailed knowledge of that franchise is not necessary to enjoy it.

A detailed, archival-focused deep dive into Gene Roddenberry's pre-Star Trek writing career, with careful unpacking of early TV scripts, pilots, and produced episodes. The show centers on how Roddenberry's themes—war, ethics, human connection, gender roles, and social commentary—emerged across 1950s–1960s television, and how production constraints, script rewrites, and casting shaped his storytelling. Expect thoughtful analysis, historical context, and accessible storytelling that appeals to Star Trek fans, TV history enthusiasts, and writers seeking insight into how a legendary creator evolved before his iconic franchise launched.
