  • I look forward to this podcast every week

I found this podcast in the NPR app and it has become one of my very favorites. There isn’t any filler, it’s all content. It gives useful information aimed at people at home, not specialists, but it doesn’t talk down. They bring in interesting experts in their fields. I always walk away with something I hadn’t known before I listened. I hope it runs forever.

Put your vegetable garden to bed
Q: Are we wrong to think that more compost is always better?
Not all compost is created equally; applying poor quality compost can harm plants and soil.
Put your vegetable garden to bed
Q: Why do you recommend soil testing so often?
Micronutrients are needed in very minute amounts, so a test every four years is good for them. For other nutrients, homeowners can test every other year due to amendments like compost that help maintain soil quality.

Q: What are the benefits of using cover crops?
Cover crops help with soil erosion, nutrient return, and can suppress weeds, contributing to overall soil health.

Q: What should we consider when cleaning tools and hardscaping in the garden?
Cleaning tools can help prevent the spread of pathogens; using a diluted bleach solution is recommended.
Vine and dandy
Q: Can we put diseased plant material in our compost bins?
It's risky unless you're sure your compost will reach high enough temperatures to kill pathogens; sending it to the city dump is a safer choice.
