Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

“The Guest”, an interview with director Mads Mengel
Q: In order to create this tension in an ambiguous climate, how did you work? Did you work by subtraction?
We began with the balance in mind, wrote 16 drafts, rehearsed with the actors, gathered their notes, and rewrote accordingly. We also shot a pilot of 18 minutes over two days to understand how these characters talk and interact, ensuring sympathy for all characters and allowing the audience to shift their alignment from scene to scene.
“The Lion at My Back”, an interview with director Tonia Mishiali
Q: Such a beautiful idea, how did it come about?
Mishiali explains that the film grew from her interest in motherhood and the mother-daughter bond, inspired by her own experiences as a mother and observations of asylum-seeking women, integrating personal resonance with broader social themes.
“Zampano”, interview with director Teilo Quillard
Q: What are your plans after Zampano in terms of your World-building for this universe?
He talks about expanding into a feature film set in a different kind of circus—more punk and anarchic—while leveraging European co-production networks to realize the project.
“Zampano”, interview with director Teilo Quillard
Q: How did your circus background influence Zampano and its visual language?
He explains that his world blends old traditional circus elements with modern sensibilities, using sound design and subtle effects to fuse realism with a sense of magic, while keeping a strong emotional throughline.
“Zampano”, interview with director Teilo Quillard
Q: What does it mean for you to be part of Future Frames as a European director?
Teilo describes Future Frames as a gateway into European cinema, emphasizing cross-cultural connections and the potential for future co-productions that would help bring his projects to wider audiences.
