Ep. 66 - Sign Language Interpretation with Sharon Neumann Solow — History, Training & the Five Steps
Q: What inspired you to write The Five Steps book, and how has it evolved alongside the field?
The five steps emerged from a culmination of in-field observations during training experiences in Italy and elsewhere, catalyzing a framework that emphasizes memory, cohesion, spatial structuring, and confidence; the book has evolved with ongoing dialogue from both sign language and spoken language interpreter communities.
Ep. 66 - Sign Language Interpretation with Sharon Neumann Solow — History, Training & the Five Steps
Q: How has technology like Zoom affected the practice of sign language interpretation, and what challenges does it introduce?
Technology expanded access and remote work but introduces challenges with screen two-dimensionality, bandwidth, and the need to preserve three-dimensional signing cues; interpreters had to pivot quickly to maintain clarity and communication quality.
Ep. 66 - Sign Language Interpretation with Sharon Neumann Solow — History, Training & the Five Steps
Q: Is ASL strictly simultaneous, or are there environments where sign language interpreters use consecutive interpretation as well?
Consecutive interpretation is used in many environments for sign language because signing is visually constrained and maintaining accuracy and grammatical structure benefits from pauses; simultaneous signing is less feasible in many scenarios, though some settings may attempt it where conditions allow.
Ep. 54 - Corrine McKay: Getting Started as a Freelance Interpreter.
Q: Did you only go with what you thought, or did you interview some people or some agencies in order to find some material for your book?
Corinne explains that while she didn't formally interview anyone, her extensive experiences and network in the industry informed the content of her book.
Ep. 54 - Corrine McKay: Getting Started as a Freelance Interpreter.
Q: How do you feel after you've written this book?
Corinne expresses a sense of completion and satisfaction with the positive reception and sales of her book.
