I listened today to the episode on Kindertotenlieder. This cycle of songs, which moved me so much when I was younger, became too emotionally painful for me in later years, after more experience of life. It was wonderful to hear this exploration of the poems by Rückert & their origins.
I didn’t know that they were not intended for publication.
The podcast is a beautifully expressed meditation on personal loss
and the way art helps the understanding of the processes of grief.

I discovered and fell in love with the song cycle a few years back (because, ridiculously enough, I used it as a motif in a fanfic 😆). I’m always in need of a engaging podcast to listen to whilst doing yard work, and I thought, “Hm, wonder if anybody’s done a deep dive on Winterreise?" Lo and behold, Follow the Lieder.

I searched for a long time for a podcast that talks about German art songs and stumbled across this wonderful podcast in 2020. After a long hiatus I thought it was dead but it’s back with a vengeance, now going through Schubert’s Winterreise. I have listened to almost all the shows and all of the Winterreise episodes. The podcast has introduced me to new songs (like Mendelssohn’s Schilflied) and deepened my understanding of old favorites like the Winterreise songs. I love this and look forward t... more
I just discovered this podcast and it is everything I needed. Mandee has this great knowledge and she makes it easy and enjoyable, and her passion is so contagious. I love how she points out this little neat things in the music, but she also plays the snippets. It is such a great work and I’m obsessed. I absolutely love this!
