  • Amazing content, and corrected my bias.

If you ever told me I'd listen to a podcast by a transgender host, I'd have said you're mad. And if you said it would specifically about training and health, I'd have laughed. I'm not laughing now, but shaking my head at my own bias and prejudice. This podcast is excellent. Yes, the guests are great, but it's the questions asked by host Nikias that make this a fantastic listen. In fact, the questions benefit beginners and advanced equally, and that's unusually brilliant. I often get annoyed at c... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Effective exercise selection for lower body training - With Dr. Eric Helms - Pt. 2 - Ep. 179
Q: Foot position on the leg press, whether we want it narrower or wider, does that make a difference?
Narrow or wider may make a difference in terms of the glutes and the adductor magnus. So the wider your foot position will produce a little more lengthening in the adductor, and a little less lengthening in the glutes.
Effective exercise selection for lower body training - With Dr. Eric Helms - Pt. 2 - Ep. 179
Q: Would you do anything to manipulate a Romanian deadlift to make it more glute dominant than hamstring dominance?
I wouldn't. I would just choose a different exercise, but you can. If you do a little more of a squat on the good morning, you know, there's active shortening of the hamstring, and you're doing what I basically said is not the right way of performing it, you are going to get more glutes because you're actually now having to extend the hips a bit more.
Effective exercise selection for lower body training - With Dr. Eric Helms - Pt. 1 - Ep. 178
Q: How would you define the difference between a Romanian deadlift and a stiff leg deadlift?
The Romanian deadlift allows knee flexion but focuses on a hip hinge, while the stiff leg deadlift keeps the knees straight.
Effective exercise selection for lower body training - With Dr. Eric Helms - Pt. 1 - Ep. 178
Q: How does the Nordic curl fit into the picture? Is it a hinge? Is it more of an isolation movement?
The Nordic curl is similar to a lying leg curl when done as intended and emphasizes eccentric training.
Effective exercise selection for lower body training - With Dr. Eric Helms - Pt. 1 - Ep. 178
Q: What difference is there, if there is any, between the hamstring curl down lying down and the hamstring curl down sitting?
Seated hamstring curls produce notable growth overall in the hamstring compared to lying leg curls, especially the biarticular muscles.
