  • Amazing content, and corrected my bias.

If you ever told me I'd listen to a podcast by a transgender host, I'd have said you're mad. And if you said it would specifically about training and health, I'd have laughed. I'm not laughing now, but shaking my head at my own bias and prejudice. This podcast is excellent. Yes, the guests are great, but it's the questions asked by host Nikias that make this a fantastic listen. In fact, the questions benefit beginners and advanced equally, and that's unusually brilliant. I often get annoyed at c... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The pump, metabolic stress, testosterone, and more hypertrophy myths - With PhD Candidate Derrick Van Every - Pt 2 - Ep. 186
Q: What is your take on the role of hormones in hypertrophy?
Hormones may cause transient fluctuations, but the evidence shows no reliable link between these fluctuations and long-term muscle growth or strength, especially when training is controlled for and compared across groups.
Death of the bulk, except not really - With Steve Hall - Ep. 187
Q: How do protein and macronutrient timing fit into a bulking plan now?
Protein targets stay high (around 1 gram per pound or more for some) with a focus on maximizing total daily intake; carbohydrate intake is prioritized to fuel training, with protein timing becoming less about exact thresholds and more about meeting daily needs.
Death of the bulk, except not really - With Steve Hall - Ep. 187
Q: Has your view on rate of gain changed since the earlier bulking episode?
Yes, the approach has become more nuanced—1-2% body weight gain per month remains solid for many, but adjustments are made based on growth potential, training quality, and progress history.
The physical and emotional challenges of transgender athletes - With Dr. Tess Kilwein - Ep. 181
Q: How do you help someone navigate the discomfort of knowing that their gender doesn't match the sport?
Challenge the idea of gender-exclusive sports by emphasizing that performance itself is not gendered and helping athletes focus on their strengths.
The physical and emotional challenges of transgender athletes - With Dr. Tess Kilwein - Ep. 181
Q: What are the most common challenges that you've seen in these athletes?
Common challenges include gender dysphoria, feelings of discomfort in body-focused sports, and navigating societal expectations.
