Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Artists’ Salon: Hairstylists Mara Roszak and Barb Thompson
Q: How did you two first meet and decide to collaborate instead of staying as separate individuals?
We met on set through a mutual contact; Barb was working with Kylie Heath, and Mara's work drew Barb in. From that initial encounter, a strong mutual curiosity evolved into a professional partnership where Barb apprenticed with Mara and later became a co-creator in Mara's ventures.
Makeup Artist Kristofer Buckle on the best 40-plus makeup tips, his genius deep plane facelift, the best Instagram beauty products, and more
Q: What is your makeup aesthetic, and how do you approach a client's face to achieve that meticulous look?
My makeup aesthetic is meticulous, and I approach each face by dissecting features one by one—neutralizing shadows, correcting asymmetries, and then building up in very small, precise steps to keep every detail perfect without looking heavy.
British Hair Legend Sam McKnight Stands Up for Beauty Teams: “We need a new deal.”
Q: How do you view the role of unions and new protections in today's fashion and beauty environments?
Unions like Bechtu show that organized backing can safeguard rates and safety; together with clearer contracts and mandatory credits, they can help restore respect and stability for artists who have traditionally been undervalued by the industry.
British Hair Legend Sam McKnight Stands Up for Beauty Teams: “We need a new deal.”
Q: Why do you think credits are so important for beauty teams beyond just the creative credit?
Credits are essential because they recognize the labor, protect the artists' livelihoods, and influence future opportunities; when people are unpaid or uncredited, the entire ecosystem loses incentive and value, including the teams that make campaigns possible.
Newsroom: Andrea Lavinthal
Q: What makes a celebrity beauty brand succeed or fail according to your experience?
The conversation stresses authenticity and real product utility; brands succeed when they avoid obvious self-promotion and demonstrate genuine use and value beyond the name.
