  • A Weekly Must-Listen

I’ve been listening for a few years and this has become one i don’t miss. The level of detail to their research is great and educational, but the real value is their thematic analysis of each film. if you like film and want to learn more about how it’s made and what it means, tune in.

if i could choose one film for them to do, it would be the 1961 West Side Story. great production history and i’d love to hear them talk about the eye of that duck

  • Film friends sans the bro

Honestly love this podcast so much. Well-researched film histories, thoughtful takes, and two friends who truly complement each other. The format and premise is so versatile and never gets stale. I find a lot of film chat unpleasantly obnoxious, or a way for people to flaunt their *pushes glasses up* huge brains, but this team are always having intelligent, open, and joyful discussions about the smartest and dumbest films around. Thank you to everyone who puts so much time into making such a bri... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Golden Compass (2007)
Q: Why did the film end up not becoming a trilogy as planned?
A combination of market dynamics, production chaos, and changing audience tastes, plus strategic decisions to end the story early due to marketing and franchise concerns, led to the decision not to continue with sequels.
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Q: What is your relationship with Pan's Labyrinth?
Stephen reflects on seeing it in theaters 20 years ago with his dad, remembering vivid scenes that shocked him and feeling that his perception of the film has evolved over time.
Don't Stop Filming
Q: How has AI affected the found footage genre?
AI makes it harder to convince audiences that found footage is real because people are skeptical of any video that looks unbelievable. It requires more creativity to make it compelling in the current technological landscape.
Don't Stop Filming
Q: What non-found footage film do you think would be interesting if it were found footage instead?
I would like to see a movie like Eddington explore how we are all constantly recording ourselves, but it's kind of like a political thriller.
Unfriended: Dark Web (2018) with Stephen Susco
Q: How do you feel about the experience of watching these films either with a crowd or when you are locked in front of your computer?
It was surprising to see that people had powerful experiences watching it alone on their computers, often mistaking notifications for part of the film.
