  • Formulaic and Unsatisfying

Although Josh Gates bills himself an archaeologist, he does precious little archaeology and never seems to find what he's looking for while making a lot of noise in the attempt. If you're interested in actual archaeology, I suggest Time Team.

  • What’s with the ads?

Started listening to the most recent episode September 10, and not 1 but 2 consecutive ads before the show even started, IN SPANISH! I don’t speak Spanish and yet I have to suffer through two consecutive commercials before I can even listen to the show? Makes me not even want to listen to the show anymore. Seriously, DO BETTER!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Finding Italy's Lost Empire
Q: Why did the Etruscans ultimately fall to Rome?
The episode suggests internal rivalries among competing city-states and a lack of unified military cohesion, which weakened the Etruscans against Rome's rising power.
Chasing the Mysteries of Moses
Q: What is OSL and why is it used here?
OSL stands for Optical Stimulated Luminescence; it measures the last time quartz grains were exposed to sunlight, helping date Bronze Age layers and determine if they align with the Exodus timeline. The process involves shielding samples from light, stimulating the minerals, and counting emitted photons to estimate age.
The Quest for El Dorado
Q: Is there still lost gold, that elusive thing the Spanish were after?
Yes, there is so much more to learn about El Dorado and the treasures that may still be hidden in the caves and mountains of Colombia.
Siberia's Coldest Case
Q: What are the strange injuries found on some hikers?
Some of the hikers had severe injuries, resembling those sustained in a car crash, including broken ribs and missing eyes or tongues, leading to speculation about the cause of death.
The Fortune of the Buzzard
Q: Where do you suspect that treasure is?
The place to start would be Reunion Island, where he said, with what I've buried here on the island.
