  • Perfect Casual Podcast

The episode I listened to was recorded outside and with birds and wind, it really felt like I was sitting there with y’all. I know not everyone would like that but I loved it. An interesting topic too. That being said, it felt like the conversation was unnecessarily dragged out and I definitely lost interest. I think there needs to be a bit more focus and speed. Otherwise, great show and perfect for listening to while driving or doing chores that’ll take a while.

Almost Local #59 | When Everything Changes, Home Becomes Internal with Nina Aziz Justin
Q: What is your fastest piece of advice for someone who feels their identity shifting or threatened by relocation?
Keep an anchor from home, maintain small rituals (like a familiar tea), stay connected with loved ones, and remember that identity evolves with each experience, which is a strength rather than a loss.
Almost Local #59 | When Everything Changes, Home Becomes Internal with Nina Aziz Justin
Q: How did you adapt culturally when you moved to the Netherlands, and what tips would you give to newcomers?
Embrace directness, build a social life outside work through classes and hobbies, learn Dutch through immersive programs like Regine Koolie, avoid showing off, and ride a bike as a way to blend in and connect with locals.
Almost Local #59 | When Everything Changes, Home Becomes Internal with Nina Aziz Justin
Q: What brought you to take the decision to move abroad at a young age, when you were underage?
There was little fear and a strong curiosity about the world, plus support from my parents who believed in my ability to pursue education abroad; I had a grand imagination about studying in England inspired by my uncle's stories and a London pencil case.
Almost Local #60 | The Reality of Being a Foreigner in Dubai: Life after a football career with Marcelo Mercuri
Q: What advice would you give to athletes planning their transitions to life after sports?
Start planning early, invest in education and passive income streams, and don't assume fame will automatically translate into long-term financial security; build a practical plan that allows you to gradually shift into a second career, ideally one that can scale and provide options for the future.
Almost Local #60 | The Reality of Being a Foreigner in Dubai: Life after a football career with Marcelo Mercuri
Q: What was the day-to-day reality like as a professional athlete moving across continents, and how did that shape your post-playing plans?
Life was intensely scheduled around training, matches, and travel, which limited free time but exposed me to diverse cultures; this exposure underscored the importance of preparing for life after football, leading me to study marketing and gradually invest in ventures that could sustain me later, like real estate.
