Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

43. How do you assure AI for bias and accessibility in the NHS? With Adam Byfield
Q: What is literacy bias, and how did NHS teams address it in practice?
Literacy bias refers to the barrier created when systems rely on written input; NHS teams detected literacy bias in chatbot interfaces, introduced user guidance, monitored punctuation usage, and planned retraining or data augmentation to reduce it.
43. How do you assure AI for bias and accessibility in the NHS? With Adam Byfield
Q: How do you define accessibility and bias in the context of NHS AI work, and why are they linked?
Accessibility is about how easy it is for people to access and use the technology, while bias concerns how the system performs differently for various groups; bias can directly impact accessibility by causing some users to be unable to use the system effectively.
62. Can organisations be trustworthy? With Matt Clark
Q: Why is this an interesting question to think about for organisations as opposed to individuals?
Because organisations are heavily relied upon for producing goods, services, and social order, so their trustworthiness can enable or block people from achieving their goals; it's about whether collective structures can sustain reliable behavior and align with moral obligations.
44. Do large language models gossip? With Lucy Osler
Q: What do people mean by lying versus bullshit in the context of LLMs?
Lying requires intention to deceive, which LLMs cannot have because they are not conscious agents; bullshit is about producing content that sounds true and authoritative without regard to its truth, which is a more accurate characterization of many AI outputs.
54. Do we need more time? With Lisa Herzog
Q: What kinds of policy changes could realistically give people more free time without hurting wages?
She discusses enforceable work-time reductions (potentially a four-day week) and the need to distribute productivity gains fairly, along with supporting local, participatory initiatives that use time efficiently and strengthen civic life.
