Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP 61 | 1991: India’s Near-Default Moment. How Did We Survive — and in 2025 What Challenges Comes Next? | Montek Singh AHLUWALIA
Q: Montek, if you had the chance to do it all over again, is there something you would have done differently from what you did in 1991?
In retrospect, we should have moved decisively to dismantle small-scale reservation and liberalize faster where India could be globally competitive, while managing political constraints better. A more aggressive, systemic reform approach with broader political buy-in might have accelerated the transition and reduced the political drag in 1993 and beyond.
EP 61 | 1991: India’s Near-Default Moment. How Did We Survive — and in 2025 What Challenges Comes Next? | Montek Singh AHLUWALIA
Q: My first question really would like to take you back to 1991. You were at the heart of India's economic policy making during one of our darkest hours. Can you take us back to that era and talk about the emotional and political mood in the corridors of power?
The crisis was driven by a huge foreign exchange crunch; controls on imports and the exchange rate intensified, reserves dwindled, and the government faced the prospects of an IMF bailout. We chose stronger, faster reforms and harder steps to restore credibility, including potentially using IMF financing if needed, but aimed to show decisive action to restore confidence and avoid default.
EP 66 | Designing Cities for People, Not Just Cars: Rethinking Urban Mobility with Zohra MUTABANNA
Q: If you had absolute freedom to fix Bombay's urban design, what would you do?
She advocates for congestion pricing as a policy tool, complemented by strong public transport and land-use planning. The goal is to reduce private vehicle dominance and encourage walking, cycling, and efficient transit as core city design principles.
EP 66 | Designing Cities for People, Not Just Cars: Rethinking Urban Mobility with Zohra MUTABANNA
Q: Zohra, what makes you get out of bed every morning?
Her motivation is to help Indian cities realize the value of planning and design, to move beyond problem-solving to proactive, homegrown thinking that makes cities thrive.
EP 65 | FreshBus: Driving India’s Intercity Travel Electric | Sudhakar CHIRRA
Q: How do you ensure safety and reliability on the road?
By elevating driver captains' professionalism and compensation, implementing robust onboard safety systems (cameras, alcohol sensors), and creating end-to-end journey transparency for customers to reduce friction and downtime.
