Code 3 Creator Patrick Pianezza on EMS Burnout, Culture, and the Experiences that Shaped the Film
Q: What impact do you hope Code 3 has on viewers and on EMS culture?
He hopes the film validates the experiences of first responders, reduces stigma around burnout, and highlights the crucial, often underappreciated work of private EMS providers. He also stresses the importance of mental health support and therapy for responders, and he envisions the film as a catalyst for broader reforms in healthcare delivery and compensation for EMS workers.

Q: What was the on-set approach to authenticity in EMS depiction, and how did you train actors?
Patrick explains that all actors received substantial EMS training, including ride-alongs, CPR, backboarding, and stretcher operations, with emphasis on not portraying patients or clinicians disrespectfully while ensuring clinical accuracy. The team aimed to capture realistic procedure and dialogue while maintaining dramatic storytelling, and they worked closely with Lifeline and LA County Fire Station 14 to provide real-world context.

Q: Take us through the process. How did you get to the point where you decided to write a screenplay?
Patrick describes how writing began as a homework assignment in an undergraduate creative-writing class, which evolved into a screenplay after his brother encouraged him to convert the EMS short story into a script. The script underwent many rewrites over years with collaboration from Chris Leone, the director and co-writer, and Rain, who brought in financing and a studio deal. The key turning point was turning a 180-page draft into a tighter screenplay, gaining industry traction, and ultimately producing the film after a long development arc.
