Welcome friends, to a podcast for a darker timeline. Maybe the darkest of all timelines. Definitely not one of the good timelines. Maybe it’s always been a dark timeline, maybe the Hadron collider screwed us over. Science may never know. What we do know is that we live in the void. The void, a place where a chittering mass of void crabs can infest a person suit and win the presidency. The void, a ... more

  • Hmm…

It would be nice to hear a little more sincerity and less sarcasm. I understand you guys are going with the satire point of view with things it’s kind of annoying for something like a philosophy podcast to be satire. Maybe that’s too meta but that’s my opinion. I am a person who does actually like satire in case you were wondering.

  • Mmm-hmmm

I’m listening to the Brittany Page interview which I found really interesting & really fought to get through it due to the host’s constant “mmm-hmm-ing” throughout. I know it’s intended to endear support of & interest in the guest but it’s really distracting.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sociology of Luck with Fabrizio Bernardi
Q: What are the key empirical findings from your PhD student study about luck and mobility?
The study showed very poor prediction of PhD outcomes, especially for first-generation students, and introduced a counterfactual life approach to assess the impact of luck on education and career trajectories.
Sociology of Luck with Fabrizio Bernardi
Q: Why has sociology under-theorized luck and how do you define chancy luck in your work?
Luck is treated as a residual category and explanatory device; the conversation distinguishes constitutive, circumstantial, and chancy (life-course) luck, with chancy luck referring to small, unpredictable events that can redirect trajectories.
Spirituality and Belonging with Kat Ford
Q: What ethical challenges arose from your fieldwork in Glastonbury?
The main challenge was respecting participants and spaces while staying true to my own atheistic perspective, avoiding intrusion or exploitation, and balancing honest observation with sensitivity to beliefs that participants hold as real.
Spirituality and Belonging with Kat Ford
Q: What do you mean by spirituality, and how is it different from organized religion?
Spirituality is a more individualized, flexible approach to belief and meaning, not bound to structured rituals or doctrine, whereas religion often involves organized communities and formal practices; the line between them can blur as people seek belonging through shared rituals.
Secular Leadership with Darrel Ray
Q: How do you address the idea that leadership is innate or learned?
Lead by teaching and developing others; leadership is not innate and requires deliberate practice, with emphasis on creating structure and processes rather than relying on individual charisma.
