  • Refreshing and informative

It’s so nice to find a podcast hosted by a kind, no-nonsense PT who is a serious runner. The guests are great, with deep experience (sometimes they are legends) in the running world, talking about very timely topics like fueling advances and RED-S. He’s also relatable talking about his own running journey.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#13 RED-S and the Female Runner with Dr. Kate Ackerman MD MPH
Q: How is RED-S defined and why is it important for athletes across the lifespan?
RED-S is essentially a mismatch between energy availability and the energy demands of exercise, which pushes the body to compensate by tapping other systems. It's not just about the menstrual cycle or bone health; it has broad health and performance implications for athletes from adolescence through menopause. Early recognition and a holistic approach with experts (nutrition, endocrinology, PT, and medical care) are key to safe training and long-term health.
#10 Pushing the Limit with Ethan Shuley
Q: How did you approach training once you decided to pursue ultramarathons and eventually marathon competition in Japan?
I shifted from focusing on lifting to heavy-running-centered preparation, gradually increasing mileage, embracing long-distance conditioning, and learning to train through injuries when appropriate while prioritizing recovery and strength work to support running load.
#10 Pushing the Limit with Ethan Shuley
Q: What was the transition like from high school to college at BYU, and how did you handle the move back from your mission?
The transition was brutal at first; I returned from Ukraine not in racing shape and had to rebuild from the ground up with a smart, staged plan. The support from coaches and event opportunities helped me re-enter competition gradually and regain confidence.
#6 Sleep (And) Traning with Dr. Jeff Durmer MD PhD
Q: What is the practical take for athletes traveling across time zones?
Plan ahead if possible by staying in the destination region early, or gradually adjust sleep timing and meal timing; consider sleep banking and light exposure to align with the competition time zone, extending sleep slightly before travel.
#11 NeverSecond with Bill Armstrong
Q: How should a marathoner start using NeverSecond products?
For marathoners, the advice is simple: start with about 60 grams per hour, using a gel every 30 minutes, and drink water to thirst; gradually gut-train with 2–3 sessions per week over 6–8 weeks before events.
